Oberlin, Ohio – Playing an electric game to open their season, the Oberlin College field hockey team hosted Nazareth on Saturday afternoon. The 4-1 loss saw
Elly Scheer nab the first goal of the season, while the Crimson and Gold move to 0-1 on the year.
The Golden Flyers caught Oberlin on their heels to start the game, scoring back-to-back goals in the first three minutes. In response, the Crimson and Gold refocused and held Nazareth scoreless through five penalty corners over the last 13 minutes of the quarter.
Oberlin came out firing in the second quarter, controlling the time of possession. A pair of penalty corners saw shots from
Shelby Roth and Scheer, both saved by the Nazareth keeper. The Crimson and Gold finally broke loose with a goal from Scheer after a double-assist from
Johana Horvath and
Bella Tilford.
The second half fell to the side of the visiting squad, but Oberlin's defense made them earn their worth behind four saves from
Janny McCormick. Nazareth added two more goals before the final whistle, as Oberlin fell 4-1 in their season opener.
"I am really proud of the way our team battled for a full 60 minutes today." Head Coach
Jess West reflects on the 2025 debut, "We created offensive pressure, got on the board, and put into play a lot of the key points we have been focusing on in practice. This is a driven group that's ready to compete and, we are excited to keep building as we head into our next game on Saturday".
West and Co. get back to action when they hit the road on Saturday, September 6, when they take on EMU. The first whistle is set to blow at 1 p.m.
