Berea, Ohio – Select members of the Oberlin College track and field teams competed yesterday at the Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet, hosted by Baldwin-Wallace. Competing late into the night, Oberlin's squad of seven came away with three top-10 all-time performances.

Today's meet was the first of three "last chance" meets at which Oberlin athletes will chase national-qualifying times. In Division III, the top 22 athletes in each event qualify for the national championships. The qualification window closes next Thursday, May 15, a week before the championships begin.

Opening the day in the 800m, Sage Serraino clocked an outdoor season best of 2:16.88. The senior delivered a trademark kick down the homestretch, catching Kenyon's Anna Brown – this year's NCAC champion in the event – just meters before the line. In addition, Serraino was less than a third of a second from a personal best.

On the men's side, Treyce Wood ran a season best in 1:55.70. The junior ran his best-paced race of the season, splitting 56.2/59.5 to win his heat. Wood tweaked his hamstring earlier in the outdoor season, and missed several races. With today's run, he ends his season just .16 off his personal best.

In the 400m hurdles, Cole Fuller placed second in 53.19, the second-fastest time of his career. Fuller's time was just .07 off his own school record of 53.12, set at last week's NCAC championships. Last week's time currently ranks Fuller 17th in Division III.

Later, as the sun set behind the stadium, Walter Moak ran 9:07.64 in the 3,000m steeplechase. The senior opened on pace to break his own school record of 8:57.02, but struggled to hold the pace in the last kilometer. Nonetheless, Moak's race was a strong rebound following a nasty fall at the conference championships. Earlier this week, it was unclear whether Moak would be healthy enough to race at all.

In the 1500m, sophomore Piers Shirk clocked a personal best of 3:54.74. Coming off of a tactical conference title at the same distance, the sophomore was primed for a faster race. In a deep field (and on his birthday), Shirk bettered his previous best by 3 seconds. He now sits #2 on the All-Time list, just .42 behind Moak's school record.

For the 5000m, senior Jonah Barber and junior Liam Newman took to the track past 10:00 p.m. Barber shattered the 15:00 minute barrier, running 14:48 to claim #2 All-Time. He stayed patient through the early laps, running a strong negative split with his typical blazing bell lap. This is a personal best of 15 seconds for the senior, and the perfect way to round out his career. Newman, making his debut in the event, also dipped under the 15:00 minute mark in 14:59. His time was good for #3 All-Time.

Back in Oberlin, junior Namu Makatiani rested this weekend, having all but solidified his place in the national championships. Last week, the triple jumper leapt 14.72m to win the NCAC title, a mark that ranks him 11th in Division III.

Next Monday, Fuller, Moak, and Shirk will race at the Widener Qualifier. The following Thursday, an Oberlin contingent may compete at either MIT in Boston or Augustana in Rock Island, Illinois.
