Oberlin, Ohio - Earlier this week, the Oberlin College track and field team joined forces with the Elyria Youth Track Club (EYTC) to host a skills workshop for elementary and middle school-aged children.

Head Cross Country Coach Izzy Alexander, who has previously partnered with EYTC, stated, "The clinic was a great time for everyone. It was a wonderful event for our athletes and our program to have the opportunity to connect with the local community over our shared experiences of Track & Field. The members of EYTC were enthusiastic and energetic, and were such fun to work with. The EYTC coaches were incredibly supportive of this event and did such a great job in helping make it happen."

Led by Oberlin student-athletes, the clinic consisted of four different stations, teaching young athletes drills for horizontal jumps, throws, plyometrics, relay exchanges, and sprints. Aimed to introduce the kids to new track and field events, the drills helped hone techniques that the young athletes already possessed. The clinic also explored the benefits that athletics and teamwork offer beyond the track, including community building and the formation of lifelong friendships.

Broken down by station, the EYTC practiced footstrikes and cadences with wicket drills in the sprints zone. At the throwing station, athletes learned proper form for throwing the shot put and javelin through the use of medicine balls and tennis balls. The children also learned a myriad of skills at the sand pit to increase their explosiveness in horizontal and vertical jumping events. Demonstrated by the Oberlin student-athletes, the youth practiced their handoff techniques with relay races.

The Crimson and Gold kick off their 2026 season with another trip next weekend to Case Western Reserve for the Spartan Icebreaker. Field events are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, with track events starting at noon.
