Oberlin, Ohio – Making statement wins over a conference foe, the Oberlin College men's and women's swim and dive teams defeated Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday night. The Yeowomen made easy work of the Battling Bishops, winning 194-61, while the Yeomen won 196-82.
Putting themselves in a great position from the start,
Ava Peyton,
Andie Kinstle,
Isabel Pfaff, and
Soomin Yoo crushed their competition in the women's 400-yard medley relay (4:14.12).
The men snagged first (3:30.49) and second (3:42.22) in the same event, led by
Myles Felt,
Isaac Viviano,
Erik Fendorf, and
Chahine Saïd on the 'A' team. The 'B' comprised of
James Moll,
Finley Barber,
Leo Powers, and
Miguel Siwady.
The men's and women's distance swimmers went 1-2 on both sides of the 1,000-yard freestyle race.
Elinor Frost (11:33.47) and
Tripp Hawkins (12:15.73) got the job done for the Yeowomen, while
Riley Conklin (11:24.52) and
Yuan Wang (11:27.98) grabbed points for the Yeomen.
With a speedy time of 1:49.71, Viviano led Oberlin to a win in the 200-yard freestyle race. The Yeowomen swept the 100-yard backstroke and some, claiming first through fifth places. In order, Peyton (1:01.58), Pfaff (1:05.18),
Hailey Hamilton (1:06.77), Yoo (1:07.24), and
Addie Malley (1:08.10) brought in 16 points for Oberlin. Saïd (54.90) shined in the men's side of the race as the only finisher below the one-minute mark.
Rookie
Kendall McKelvey grabbed first place for the Yeowomen in the 200-yard butterfly race, touching the pad at 2:27.99.
Lucien Regnier (2:10.12) carried the Yeomen to gold in the same race.
In the 50-yard free, Pfaff led with 24.89, followed closely by Frost at 26.21. Fendorf finished in 22.23, and
John Polylogidis earned second in 23.19.
At the diving break,
Faye Huffman captured the top spot with a score of 146.60 in the 1-mtr dive. Teammates
Elizabeth Huettig and
Winnie Wood followed her performance with score of 136.30 and 124.35, respectively. Wood took care of 3-mtr duties for the team, earning 142.90 points.
Sebastian Lagasse competed solo for the men, scoring 158.20 points off the board. The sophomore took on the 3-mtr dive as well where he scored 142.90 points.
Back in the pool, the Battling Bishops grabbed three straight first-place finishes in the men's and women's 100-yard freestyle races and the women's 200-yard backstroke. Felt broke the drought for the Yeomen in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.36. Meanwhile, Yoo (2:38.68) put the Yeowomen back on the board in the 200-yard breaststroke.
In the 500-yard freestyle race, Frost led the Yeowomen with 5:42.86 pace. The senior was the only swimmer to finish in under six minutes.
Powers exacted revenge on his 500-yard freestyle race against OWU last season, where he lost to the Battling Bishops by less than a length. Powers pushed through the distance to finish in 5:09.35 to reset his career-best time.
In the butterfly, Peyton struck gold again, this time completing the 100-yard race in 1:02.39. Viviano took care of winning for the men with a time of 56.60.
In the final individual race of the night, Peyton and
Gretchen Lotter finished first and second in the 400-yard IM. Peyton earned first in 4:51.99, while Lotter finished in 5:12.50. For the men, Siwady (4:18.02) took first, closely followed by Powers (4:29.14) in second.
Closing out with the 200-yard freestyle relay, Oberlin's 'A' team of Yoo, Frost,
Charlotte Hantus, and Pfaff grabbed 11 points with the top time of 1:44.53. Saïd, Regnier,
Julian Walls, and, Fendorf led the men's team to the race's best finish of 1:31.01.
Oberlin competes again this Saturday, January 18 in a double dual meet against DII programs in the Malone Pioneers and the top-40 Gannon Golden Knights.
