Track and Field Break Two Records on Friday Competition

OBERLIN, OH- Participating in a pair of meets to start the weekend, the Oberlin College track and field team competed both at home and on the road. With the majority of the team at home for the Crimson and Gold Invite, the men's distance medley and 4x400m relay team travelled north to Michigan for the Big Meet, hosted by Grand Valley State University.

The Crimson and Gold broke a pair of records on Friday night, beginning in Michigan, the men's 4x400m relay team of Kambi Obioha, Cole Fuller, Sam Fechner, and Armand Andry. The team shattered the school record for the second time this season, with a stunning time of 3:15.16. The relay team reset the record that was broken just three weeks ago at the Wooster Invite.

In his first meet of the year, Namu Makatiani set a new school record in the 60m hurdles event, breaking Adriano Atallah's run of 8.71 set in 2018. The second-year speedster clocked in at 8.70 to earn first place in the event.
 
Ryley Steggall (4.57m) and Celia Vaughn (4.03m) kicked off the Crimson and Gold Invite in the women's long jump, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. In the men's long jump, Xander Francoeur set a new PR at 5.99m, where he led the Yeomen in second place. Kit Evans followed the third-year with a PR of his own, earning fifth after with a jump of 5.65m. In his season debut, Namu Makatiani picked up where he left off in the triple jump, launching 13.64m to earn the top marks.
 
In throws, Hayden Hill led the Yeowomen to a first-place finish in the women's shot put. The senior threw 10.20m, nearly one meter farther than her competition. Isaiah Schuham-Anders led the men's field, throwing 12.77m to edge out his competition.
 
Making their mark in the running events, Hill (10.64) and Vaughn (11.36) finished 1-2 in the women's 60m hurdles event. Avery Russell and Serafina Yan went head-to-head in the women's 400m dash, with Russell coming out on top at 1:06.50, while Yan clocked in at 1:12.88. Jesse Herdman finished fourth in the men's race with a time of 55.42. Madisyn Burke grabbed her first collegiate blue ribbon finish, with a speedy 8.69 in the women's 60m sprint. Francoeur made his debut in sprint events, running a 7.64 in the men's 60m dash.
 
Lillian McFarlin, the Yeowomen in the 800m dash, sprinting 2:35.42 to beat out her Trine competition. Jerry Achtermann led the Yeomen, coming in third with a time of 2:05.44. In the 200m, Burke continued her success with a time of 29.77 ahead of her teammate Yan, who crossed the finish line at 33.65. Reese Hyatt ran his quickest 200m of the season, clocking in a very fast 23.42.
 
The Crimson and Gold dominated the women's 3000m run, led by Amber Borofsky (11:16.91) and Sophie Mateja (11:19.82) finished first and second, both notching new personal best performances. Third-year harrier Caleigh Lyons came in fourth, crossing at 11:51.33. Charlie Endres led the pack in the final running event of the night for Oberlin, with a time of 8:52.69 in the 300m race.

Liam Newman, Fechner, Obioha, and Walter Moak will continue the Yeomen's run in Michigan, competing in the distance medley relay tomorrow, Saturday, February 10. A select number of athletes who competed in the Crimson and Gold Invite will travel to Westerville, OH, tomorrow, Saturday, February 10, for the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Otterbein University.
