Final Stats From Spring Break (7 Games)
Tucson, AZ - The Oberlin College baseball team concluded its spring break trip with a 4-3 record, splitting its final two games on Friday afternoon at the Tucson Invitational. The Yeomen earned a 10-8 win over Wesleyan to open the day before falling 6-5 in the finale to Carleton.
Wesleyan Recap
Oberlin belted out 15 hits in the win over the Cardinals with
Yianni Gardner,
Jacob Thompson and
John Schooner each having three to spearhead the offense.
Starter
Justin Fuls struck out seven over the front three innings and finished with eight punchouts but he lasted just 4.1 innings as his pitch count swelled to over 100 before he departed after surrendering seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, two walks, and a hit batter.
However,
Max Wassarman was simply sensational out of the bullpen, notching his second win of the year after he worked 4.2 innings allowing just two hits and one run while fanning four.
Oberlin jumped all over Cardinals' ace Patrick Murphy from the onset, posting a four-spot in the top of the first inning. After back-to-back singles from Gardner and
Max Anastasio, a throwing error by Murphy scored both of them.
Ethan Hurwitz would later follow with an RBI groundout before
Jake Freed stole home on a first-and-third double steal.
Unfortunately, Wesleyan responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first before the Yeomen would add on four more tallies in the fourth all with two outs. Gardner got the rally rolling with a run-scoring single to left center that plated
John Schooner after he led off the inning with a double. However, the big blow of the inning came courtesy of Thompson he roped a bases-clearing three-run double down the left field line to make an 8-3 Yeomen advantage.
The lead was quickly shrunk back down though as the Cardinals scored a pair in each of the fourth and fifth innings to get back within one at 8-7.
Oberlin would take advantage of a costly error to scratch a run across in the sixth and would get another seven on Gardner's clutch two-out single to left that scored
Jake Blozy.
Wesleyan would get one back in the seventh but Wassarman was nails in the eighth and ninth, allowing just one base runner en route to preserving the win for the Yeomen.
Carleton Recap
While the Yeomen took it to the Knights just one day ago, today was a different story as untimely hitting and lackluster defense proved to be the difference in the end.
Thompson had a strong bounce-back start on the bump, going 6.1 innings while striking out seven over 114 pitches. He was ultimately tagged for four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks.
Oberlin out-hit Carleton 10-5 with
Joe Strabley (3) and Blozy (2) accounting for half of the team's hits.
The Yeomen led 2-0 after the top of the third innings, scoring in the second on an RBI double by
Ryan Kaestle and then getting another third on a Knights' defensive miscue.
Carleton would go out in front in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs in the inning on three hits with Ananth Iyer's two-run double evening the affair before Jack Hommeyer's run-producing single gave them the lead.
Oberlin would go back out in front in the fifth on Anastasio's two-out RBI single that scored Strabley. The Yeomen cushion would increase two in the seventh as Gardner poked another RBI double to the gap in left center.
Unfortunately, Oberlin couldn't protect the lead as two errors in the seventh allowed Carleton to tie the game before they scored two more in the eighth on two hits, a walk, and an error.
The Yeomen would threaten in the ninth as Strabley banged a double over the left fielder's head and would then trade places with Blozy as he poked a two-base hit down the left field line. However, he was ultimately left stranded as Will Schepf induced a soft lineout by Gardner and deep fly ball out by Anastasio to end the game.
Oberlin heads back home at 5-6 overall and will travel to Muskingum University on Tuesday afternoon for a 4 p.m. matinee.
