Yeomen Sink the Muskies

New Concord, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team knocked off 11-win Muskingum 12-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Mose Morehead Field.

Oberlin pounded out 13 hits in the game with Ethan Hurwitz (3), Jake Blozy (2), Yianni Gardner (2), Jake Freed (2), and Joe Strabley (2) each turning in multi-hit performances.

Junior Jay Aghanya notched his first win of the season and second of his career after he worked five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, four walks, and a hit batter. The 6-foot-6 Herdon, Virginia, native also struck out five.

Oberlin played from in front from the onset, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Jacob Thompson and an opposite-field double by Hurtwitz that scored Gardner.

After the Muskies got one back in the bottom of the first, Oberlin went right back to work by posting two more runs in the second as Gardner poked a ball down the right field line to score Strabley and then Blozy would later race home on a first-and-third double steal.

The Yeomen broke the game open, scoring five runs on three hits and two errors in the fourth inning with the big blow coming courtesy of Max Anastasio's grand slam.

Oberlin would leave no doubt in the final outcome after adding on three more insurance runs in the seventh. Freed roped a triple into the right field corner to score Hurwitz and John Schooner followed with a squeeze bunt to plate the Yeomen junior. The Yeomen's final tally of the game was produced by Strabley as he slapped a ball back up the box to score Schooner.

Ty Weatherspoon worked the final three innings on the bump to earn the save as he allowed just one run on one hit and three walks to go along with three strikeouts. Rookie Liam Rose also made his collegiate debut, giving up a run on two hits and a walk in the sixth. The 6-foot-4 southpaw notched his first-career strikeout as he fanned Ryan Schwartz for the second out of the inning.

The win evened the Yeomen's record at 6-6 while the Muskies fell back to 11-4.

Oberlin opens conference play at home on Saturday, April 1 against the College of Wooster. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 12 p.m.
