Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team pounded out a season-high 16 hits and starter
Vince Dolcemaschio was masterful on the bump as the Yeomen defeated the Carleton Knights 11-1 in seven innings on Thursday afternoon.
Dolcemaschio matched a career-high with seven punchouts and went walk-free over 83 pitches of work. His outing was highlighted by an immaculate inning as he struck out the side in the fifth on just nine pitches. The Los Angeles, California, native face 26 batters, inducing seven flyball outs and six groundball outs while surrendering just four hits and one unearned run.
All nine of the Yeomen's starters had a hit in the game highlighted by
Jake Blozy's 4-for-5 effort. Senior
Max Anastasio went 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, and two RBIs while
Yianni Gardner and
John Schooner each had a pair of hits in the win.
Oberlin wasted no time in jumping all over the Knights, plating four runs in the home half of the first inning. Anastasio's triple down the right field line opened the scoring and
Jacob Thompson followed with a run-scoring single to left.
Max Cairo and
Jake Freed also registered RBIs in the frame.
The Yeomen added another pair of runs in the third as the first two hitters reached base before sophomore
Ethan Hurwitz delivered a run-producing single to center. With runners on the corners, Cairo would then drop down a safety squeeze to plate Thompson.
Oberlin continue to tough up Carleton pitching, adding two more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings with Thompson and Blozy each picking up RBIs over the two frames.
The game would end in the seventh on Anastasio's bouncing-ball single down the third-base line that scored Blozy.
The win ran Oberlin's record to 4-5 while Carleton fell to 3-7.
Oberlin will conclude its spring break trip tomorrow with a split doubleheader against Wesleyan (10 a.m. MST) and Carleton (1:30 p.m. MST).
