Game Recap: Football |

Football Falls at Denison

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team suffered a 51-10 loss at Denison University on Saturday afternoon.

The Yeomen defense turned in an inspired first-quarter effort, holding the Big Red scoreless in the frame but Denison would eventually breakthrough in the second quarter with four touchdowns and never look back.

Sophomore wide receiver Ty Weatherspoon continued to be a bright spot for the Oberlin offense as he finished with a career-high 144 yards on six catches with one touchdown to run his season TD total to three. Senior Brian Colarusso caught a team-high seven passes for 52 yards in the loss.

Senior QB Chris Allen Jr. was held to a season-low 117 yards on 12-of-23 passing. Evan Smith-Rooks came in late and went 8-for-11 for 109 yards and a touchdown. The Yeomen had absolutely nowhere to go on the ground, finishing with 14 yards rushing.

Special teams continued to plague the Yeomen as three of Denison's six touchdowns came against Oberlin's punt team. Jaylin Epps opened the game's scoring just 90 seconds into the second quarter with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown and he would later close out the first half with a 94-yard punt return, blowing past the Yeomen along the near sideline to make it a 28-0 Big Red lead at the half.

Those two returns were sandwiched with two TD passes from Drew Dawkins as he hooked up with Josh Aiello from 20 yards out before going up top to Mack Marston for a 42-yard scoring strike.

Oberlin's first points of the game came early in the third quarter as Wes Penta capped an 8-play, 63-yard drive with a 29-yard field goal.

Denison would respond with a 14-yard TD run by Trey Fabrocini, which was his eighth score of the year and then the Big Red special teams would step up again as Sean Carr blocked Penta's punt that was scooped up by Andrew Brown for a touchdown.

With the game well in hand for the Big Red, Oberlin would put together its best drive of the game early in the fourth as Smith-Rooks orchestrated an 8-play, 75-yard jaunt that was highlighted by a 46-yard TD pass to Weatherspoon.

Elliott Meyer led the Yeomen with 15 tackles, while Hunter Green added eight stops and a sack. Gavi Genger also chipped in a sack for OC.

The loss dropped Oberlin back to 0-3 while the Big Red moved to 3-0.
