Oberlin, Ohio – The 2022 softball season came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers swept the Oberlin College Yeowomen by the scores of 8-0 (5 Inn.) and 8-2.
Prior to game one, the program honored seniors
Caley Dunlop,
Cat Moruzzi,
Anna Slebonick, and
Vianca Dagnino. Moruzzi departs as one of the most decorated players in program history with 125 hits in just 75 games to rank fourth all-time and will graduate first all-time with a career batting average of .475. Additionally, she reset her own single-season hits mark with 57 this year.
Unfortunately, Oberlin couldn't find much offense in the first game, getting shutout for the first time all year with
Kathryn Beeman and
Lalli Lopez producing the Yeowomen's only two hits of the contest.
The Tigers posted single tallies in each of the first two innings but broke the game open with four runs in the fourth before adding on two more in the fifth on Elise Freedman's two-out two-RBI single as she finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
Katie Austin (2-8) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and six runs, but just three of those were earned. Austin was walk free and had one strikeout in 3.2 innings of work.
It was more of the same in game two as Oberlin trailed 8-0 and had just two hits heading into the seventh before showing some signs of life in the final inning of the season. After a leadoff walk to Lopez, Dagnino legged out an infield single for their second hit of the game and Slebonick would follow by getting on the board with a single back up the box.
Haley Bartsch would then pick up her 13
th RBI of the year to cap the game's scoring.
The Tigers, who had 13 hits in game one, belted out 15 more in the nightcap as they finished the year 15-20 overall and 6-10 in the NCAC.
Playing their first full season since 2019, the Yeowomen ended the campaign at 8-24-1 and 2-14 in the NCAC.
