Yeowomen Roll Raiders

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team turned in a commanding 79-64 victory over the visiting University of Mount Union Purple Raiders on Tuesday night at Philips Gym.

Junior guard Alyson Jefferson continued to impress as she finished with 21 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Camille Zinaich poured in a season-high 19 points on an efficient 8-of-9 shooting, while Gina Lombard chipped in 11 points and six assists in the win as she finished with a plus-minus of +24.

A Jefferson triple-hit at the 6:20 mark of the first quarter gave Oberlin a 10-5 lead. It was later level at 12 but the Yeowomen scored the final six points of the session to take an 18-12 advantage after the opening frame.

Oberlin would break the game open in the first five minutes of the second quarter, using a 13-4 burst to swell the lead out to 31-16. The run featured triple-hits from Jaedyn O'Reilly and Angela Kumler. In the closing moments of the half, Maggie Balderstone was fouled on a 3-point attempt and would go to the line where they cashed in all three charity tosses to give Oberlin a 41-25 lead at the intermission.

A Lombard long-distance connection early in the third quarter gave Oberlin its first 20-point cushion of the night at 47-25 and the Purple Raiders never really threatened to shrink the deficit as Oberlin carried a 66-41 lead into the final frame.

The Yeowomen shot a season-high 50 percent from the floor, depositing 26 of the 52 shots they hoisted, which included an 9-of-23 (39.1%) showing from beyond the arc. Oberlin also outscored Mount Union 32-20 in the paint and turned 21 Purple Raider turnovers into 20 points.

The victory marked the third straight for the Yeowomen as they are now 5-2 on the year while the Raiders fell back to an even 3-3.

Oberlin will continue its three-game homestand on Saturday afternoon as Penn State Behrend comes to town for a 2 p.m. tip.
