Oberlin, Ohio – Facing their toughest opponent this season, the Oberlin College women's basketball team fell to Penn State Behrend in a gritty 86-75 matchup that extended into overtime at home on Saturday afternoon.
Jaedyn O'Reilly,
Alyson Jefferson, and
Camille Zinaich each put up double-digits points, but ultimately the Yeowomen suffered their third blemish of the year.
Oberlin set the pace of the game just seconds in as Zinaich drove to the basket straight from winning the tipoff. Up early, the Yeomen quickly fell behind as the Lions responded with a three-point play.
The Yeowomen didn't retake the lead until the end of the first quarter after
Angela Kumler found
Lily Najmulski for a shot behind the arc. Now up 16-14 over PSUB, Oberlin secured their lead with an ensuing 10-4 run.
The Crimson and Gold dominance continued through the second quarter as Oberlin outscored Penn State 18-15, going 6-11 from the field with six different scorers.
The score 41-36 at the start of the second half, the Lions began to chip away at the Yeowomen's lead until they found a way to tie it up at 52-52 with :49 to go in the quarter. Coming up big for the Crimson and Gold, Najmulski responded with a three-pointer to cap the quarter and regain a 55-52 lead for the Yeowomen.
Oberlin never kept their momentum rolling and hit a trio of early jumpers in the fourth period to extend their lead to five. The Yeowomen cushion would swell to as many as 13, 69-56, with 5:14 left in regulation but everything would unravel from there as OC failed to score the rest of the way to allow the Lions to come back and tie it with one second left on an Alexis Furyes layup.
Penn State completely dominated the Yeowomen in over, putting up eleven unanswered points before Oberlin's Jefferson broke the drought with a layup with 45 ticks left to finally end a nine-minute scoreless streak. Down 80-71 with 43.6 seconds to go,
Gina Lombard and Jefferson each hit another jumper, but it was too little too late as Oberlin was unable.
The Yeowomen get back in action next Tuesday, December 6 against Bluffton.
During the Tuesday game, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee will be hosting their Holiday Hoops Pledge Game to raise money for St. Jude's Research Hospital in their fight against childhood cancer.
