Springfield, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's soccer team was less than 30 seconds away from a victory but the Wittenberg Tigers finally got on the board in the closing seconds to earn a 1-1 draw with the Yeowomen on Saturday afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field.
The result was the first tie of the year for Oberlin whose record is now 7-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NCAC.
Both teams were feeling each other out in the center of the park throughout the opening 45-minute stanza as neither team threatened to score with the Yeowomen taking just one first-half shot.
The action would intensify for both sides in the second half with Oberlin finally breaking through in the 62nd minute as sophomore
Heather Benway deposited her NCAC-leading eighth goal of the year with the help of a
Zoe Garver feed.
The Oberlin rearguard would stand tall the rest of the way to keep the Tigers at bay en route to nearly securing their fourth clean-sheet victory of the season but the Tigers kept fighting to the bitter end and their perseverance would pay off as Alex Hill sent in bouncing ball in the box off a corner kick service in the final moments of the match..
Benji wasn't tested much between the pipes early on while finishing the contest with three saves.The backline protected her well, fending off a flurry of corner kicks throughout the 90-minute affair but their eighth and final one proved to be costly for the Yeowomen.
The stalemate dropped Wittenberg back to 2-7-5 overall and 1-0-2 in league play.
Oberlin returns home to host Kenyon College on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
