Oberlin Athletics Mourns the Loss of Aiden Day

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College Department of Athletics and entire campus community extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of men's lacrosse player Aiden Day, who passed away on Saturday, August 29, at the age 22 after a multi-year battle with leukemia.

Day, who was born on January 2, 1998, played in seven games for the Yeomen in 2018 before receiving his heartbreaking diagnosis on November 8, 2018.

"Aiden's courage, determination, compassion, and selflessness during his fight against leukemia are an inspiration to anyone that had the fortune of being in his life, knowing him, or hearing of his battle," Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Topher Grossman said. "His impact, legacy, and spirit will live on in all of us. Our thoughts, prayers, and love are with his family."

Day was the recipient of the inaugural Crimson and Gold Courage Award at the 2020 Obie Awards for being a true inspiration for so many across the Oberlin College community.

Even during his time of greatest need, Day's selflessness shined through when he was around his teammates noting, "What I wanted them to see was very different from what I was feeling, and yet I always tried my hardest to seem cheerful, optimistic, and never afraid or sad.  But what was special for me about them coming to visit was how they brought me out of my new identity as a cancer patient for a short while.  The guys who I had known since I started Oberlin came and we talked about the upcoming season, about our coaches, game plans, and captain's practices.  It was so relieving to have regular conversations about everyday activities, and although it made me miss school, I was also so happy to not be talking about my med schedule or my vital signs."

"Aiden will continue to be the heartbeat and a guiding light for the men's lacrosse program," Associate Vice President for Athletics Advancement and Delta Lodge Director of Athletics & Physical Education Natalie Winkelfoos said. The way he chose to show up in this world and for his teammates made an impact that is beyond measure. He is the illustration of courage, kindness, strength and love."

Day is survived by his mother, Carmel Schettino, father, Christian Day, and sister, Aniella.
