Box Score Ann Arbor, MI – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team got out to a quick 3-1 lead but had no answer for a Hope attack that put up 17 goals on their way to a five-goal victory on a game played at the University of Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
Michael Muldoon paced the Yeomen offense with five goals while
Max Cha added three tallies and an assist for a four-point day.
Hope opened the scoring 4:30 into the contest before Cha got Oberlin on the board with an unassisted tally at the 8:05 mark of the opening quarter.
Muldoon and
Griffin Cappelletti would add goals of their own later in the quarter to give the Yeomen a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes of play.
The Flying Dutch began the second period with six straight goals to open up a four-goal advantage at 7-3 before
Tom Decker found Cappelletti to stop the bleeding at 7-4 with 5:52 left until the intermission.
Hope would answer in the final minute of the half to send Oberlin to the break trailing 8-4.
With the Flying Dutch holding a 10-5 lead in the third quarter, the Yeomen rattled off three consecutive goals from Cha, Muldoon and
Ryan Blasberg respectively to pull within two, 10-8, at the 2:04 mark of the quarter.
Unfortunately, Hope answered with a crucial goal as four seconds remained in the frame to halt the Oberlin momentum and carry an 11-8 lead into the final quarter.
The Flying Dutch pushed the margin to six, 14-8, with three straight goals to start the fourth before Muldoon and
Erik Zeug stopped the run and cut the deficit to four, 14-10, with 10:27 remaining in the game.
The story of the game was Hope's ability to answer the bell as it countered with three more goals to ice the game at 17-10 on its way to a 17-12 victory.
Hope held slight advantages in shots (46-39), ground balls (46-40) and face offs (18-15) while Oberlin was successful on 20-27 clears and scored on each of their two extra-man opportunities.
The Yeomen return home on Wednesday, March 11 for a 7:00 p.m. match versus Otterbein.
