Oberlin, Ohio – After battling a string of nationally ranked opponents, the Oberlin College men's tennis team had a more welcomed challenge on Saturday afternoon as the dispatched the Centre College Colonels, 9-0, at the John W. Heisman Field House.
The Yeomen swept through doubles play, edging out a tight battle at the top while cruising to wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The No. 1 pairing of
Camron Cohen and
Stephen Gruppuso gutted out a 9-8 (7-1) win over Arpit Maini and Trey Akmon.
Manickam Manickam and
Michael Drougas were easy 8-2 winners at No. 2, while the senior duo of
Robert Gittings and
Levi Kimmel cruised to an 8-3 victory in the third position.
The No. 1 singles battle was the first to finish as Drougas had no trouble with Maini, earning a 6-1, 6-2 win to run his career singles record to 54-30.
The match-clinching fifth point came courtesy of
Zachary Vaughn at No. 3 singles where he got the best of Adam Slone in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Gruppuso, a sophomore from Bayport, New York, notched his 25
th career singles win with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Max Middleton in the second position.
Gittings was also a straight-set winner at No. 5 as he got the best of Matthew Ko, 6-2, 6-0, but the Yeomen needed the full three sets to win at No. 4 and No. 6.
Manickam, a senior from Sandusky, Ohio, dropped the first set 7-6 (9-7) before bouncing back with a 6-1 win in the second. In the decisive super-breaker, he prevailed 10-4. In the sixth position,
Camron Cohen fell to Ben Hadlock 6-3 in the first set, but regrouped to win 6-0 in the second before taking the breaker by a 10-6 count.
The win moved the Yeomen's record to 2-6 on the young season. They will be back in action on Friday, March 2 when they host the University of Rochester at 3 p.m.
