Cleveland, Ohio — The Oberlin College track and field teams opened its 2018-19 season at the Case Western Reserve University Spartan Holiday Classic on Saturday.
The Yeowomen finished second with 110.333 points, coming just a half a point behind the host Spartans who finished the meet with 110.833 points. The Yeomen finished fourth in the team standings as they compiled 60 points.
First-year pole vaulter
Sarah Voit made her impact felt with a first-place finish. She cleared 10-06.00 to beat the 15-person field. Behind Voit was her classmate
Talia Barton as she cleared the bar at the 10-06.00 height on her third attempt.
Aesha Mokashi finished third in the long jumping event. The first-year jumper landed at the 16-00.25 mark to come in behind a pair of Ohio Wesleyan jumpers.
Jasmine Keegan led the Yeowomen throwers in the weight throw. The Maplewood, New Jersey, native earned a mark of 50-02.75 to beat the field. Senior captain
Naeisha McClain picked up another eight team points in the event with a heave of 48-09.50.
In the shot put, McClain recorded her best throw on her first attempt to place second (39-07.25). Shortly behind her was first-year
Victoria Blair who earned a mark of 39-06.50 to win her flight.
On the track, the Yeowomen took the top-3 spots in the 3,000-meter run.
Abigail Bellows finished first in the event (11:05.72),
Nina Liloia (11:27.89) took second and
Phoebe von Conta placed third (11:28.62).
Sophia Cunningham picked up eight more points for the Yeowomen in the 800-meter event. The first-year completed the race in 2:27.99, with her classmate
Maggie Allen finishing fourth (2:34.73).
In the 60-meter dash,
Imani Cook-Gist took fifth in the finals, recording a time of 8.29 seconds. The senior sprinter crossed the finish line in 8.19 seconds in the prelims to earn a spot in the finals.
In the men's weight throw
Hank Sinn placed third for the Yeomen. The Latty, Ohio, native registered a heave of 48-00.75 to pick up six team points. In the shot put, the senior recorded a throw of 45-01.50 to place fourth.
Senior
Jahkeem Wheatley and and first-year Perry Knox tied for third in the pole vault for 11 points in the event. Both Yeomen cleared 12-11.50 on their first attempts.
In the long jump event sophomore
Connor Hibbard finished fifth, landing at the 20-06.50 mark. The Michigan native cleared his best mark from last season by almost a foot (19-09.00) at the Kenyon Spring Invitational.
On the track,
Adriano Atallah recorded a time of 8.71 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to finish second. Atallah's performance breaks
Jerry Choi school record time of 8.86 at Kent State University back in 2012. In the 200-meter dash the New Rochelle, New York, native earned a fourth place finish (23.27). The second-year combined events athlete earned career-best marks in both of the events to start the year.
Samuel Mader earned a fifth-place finish in the 800. The sophomore mid-distance runner crossed the line in 2:04.32, just 3.48 seconds off his career-best performance.
To finish off the season opening meet, the 4x400-meter relay team of Mader,
Nathan Mendoza,
Victor Salcido and Knox finished third overall. The foursome finished the relay in 3:45.53 to get Oberlin six more points.
The Oberlin track and field team will be back in action next weekend when they compete at the two-day Kent State University Golden Flash Gala (Dec. 7-8).
