WESTLAKE, Ohio - After a stellar season opener at Case Western Reserve's Spartan Holiday Classic, four Oberlin College track and field scholar-athletes received North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The Oberlin women had a clean sweep as
Linnea Halsten,
Monique Newton and
Imani Cook-Gist all claimed Athlete of the Week honors in their respective disciplines.Â
Cook-Gist returned to competition in mid-season form, rebreaking the program 60-meter dash record that she set last year. Cook-Gist hustled to a victory in 7.89, breaking her own record by tenths of a second. The Santa Monica, California native went on to help the Yeowomen's 4x400-meter relay team to close her day.
Fresh off of her debut at the NCAA Cross Country Nationals, Halsten laced up her spikes and returned to the track and clocked a 10:25.22 in the women's 3k. The Madison, Wisconsin native ran to an uncontested first-place finish.
Newton picked up right where she left off in May, claiming two All-American accolades by earning up her first, of what is sure to be many, Field Athlete of the Week laurels.Â
She split victories in the throwing events with the second-half of the throwing dynamic duo
Ana Richardson to get the year started. Newton claimed the victory in the shot put with a mark of 44-10.25 (13.67m) as Richardson let loose a toss of 42-09.50 (13.04m) to lock down second in the season opener.
Richardson took the weight throw with a heave of 54-11.50 (16.75m) on her final throw of the day, while Newton followed closely with a mark of 53-11.75 (16.45m) in her third try inside the cage.
For the Yeomen,
James Tanford posted one of two-victories on Saturday afternoon turning in a first-place finish in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 41-02.50 (12.55m). The Hoosier State native went on to a third place-finish in the long jump with a mark of 20-05.25 (6.23m) at the non-scoring Case Spartan Holiday Classic.
The NCAC weekly selections and the rest of Oberlin College track and field return to competition on Friday, December 9 as they travel to Kent State for the two-day Golden Flash Gala.
