Oberlin Soccer Players Honored by the OCSA

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's and women's soccer teams were well represented on the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association's (OCSA) All-Ohio and Academic All-Ohio teams, which were announced on Monday.

Junior Gwennie Gardiner joined Yeomen selections Nick Wertman, Adam Chazin-Gray, Trenton Bulucea, and Sam Weiss as an All-Ohio honoree. Wertman and Chazin-Gray took home first-team laurels, while Bulucea and Weiss were second-team selections. Gardiner was tabbed a third-team honoree on the women's end.

Additionally, Gardiner was a First-Team Academic All-Ohio recipient, with teammates Tyler Sloan and Taylor French joining her on the second - and third-team, respectively.

For the Yeomen, senior Galen Brennan joined Wertman and Chazin-Gray on the Academic All-Ohio First-Team.

To qualify for Academic All-Ohio status, a player must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a significant team contributor.

A First-Team All-NCAC selection, Gardiner closed the year with 11 goals and five assists for a league-best 27 points. Against her conference counterparts, Gardiner ranked first in points, points per game (1.69), and shots (63) and finished in a tie in goals, goals per game (0.69), and game-winning goals (4).

A Political Science major, Sloan earned All-NCAC honorable-mention honors after a strong senior season. She appeared in 15 matches with 14 starts, tallying one goal and three assists in her final season donning the Crimson and Gold. The New York, New York, native closed her career with eight goals and seven assists in 68 career caps.

French, who majors in Biology, helped the Oberlin offense outscore their opponents 31-25 on the year as she scored 11 times and finished second in the NCAC with 24 points.

Brennan and Chazin-Gray were previously selected as CoSIDA Academic All-America selections for their work in the classroom and on the pitch. A three-time All-NCAC honoree, Brennan started 19 matches this season and appeared in 58 contests in his career. Chazin-Gray, who hails from Berkeley, California, is double majoring in biology and neuroscience. A First-Team All-NCAC selection this season, he departs Oberlin having earned all-conference accolades three times.

Wertman was the first player in school history to earn North Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors. The Westlake, Ohio, native ended the season second in the NCAC in goals (16) and points (35), while leading the league and finishing fourth in the nation with seven game-winning goals.

Weiss had a strong senior season, adding NSCAA all-region recognition to his second-team selection from the NCAC. The local Oberlin product capped his career by scoring seven goals to go along with three assists this year.

The lone underclassman to be honored, Bulucea was the conference's top distributor with 11 assists. The Cleveland Heights, Ohio, native also scored four goals while finishing 18th in the country in total assists.
