Women’s Basketball Gets Set to Go

Oberlin, Ohio – With a deep and talented roster from top to bottom, the Oberlin College women's basketball team has the pieces in place to make a playoff push in the North Coast Athletic Tournament this season.

Oberlin, which was selected fourth in the NCAC Preseason Poll, boast a 19-person roster that is comprised of three seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and nine first-years.

"We certainly have depth this year, which is something we haven't had in the past," said Head Coach Kerry Jenkins, who is now in his ninth season at the helm of the program. "We will have options this year with different lineups and it will allow us to keep everybody fresh."

The junior trio of Tyler Parlor, Abby Andrews, and Anna Moore will serve as team captains as their leadership will be counted on both on and off the court.

Parlor was an NCAC honorable-mention selection a year ago as she finished second in the league in rebounding (8.7) to go along with 7.7 points per game. After being tasked with running the point last year, Parlor should return her more traditional small forward position this year.

Andrews also had a strong sophomore season as she averaged 9.6 points per game in conference play while averaging 7.8 rebounds throughout the season. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, she scored in double figures 10 times and posted three double-doubles.

Moore provided instant energy off the bench with 12 blocks and could see an increased role that mirrored her freshman campaign when she scored in double figures five times while grabbing 84 boards to go along with 41 blocks.

"We picked these three to be our captains for a reason," Jenkins said. "I think their personalities compliment each other well and they will be key in taking this team where we want it to go."

Olivia Canning and Alex Stipano headline the sophomore class that also features Sarah Feinberg and Sabrina Deleonibus. The 6-foot-2 Canning blocked a school record 89 shots while averaging 6.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Stipano is back healthy after averaging 9.8 points per game through the first five games before going down with a season-ending injury.

"Liv and Alex are going to be tough covers for our opponents this year. Obviously, Liv size is a factor on both ends of the floor and we need to use her even more on offense this year. I am excited to get Alex back as she can put the ball in the hoop and score from pretty much anywhere."

Seniors Eleanor Van Buren, Briana Santiago and Connie Estevez provide valuable experience off the bench, while the large first-year class will also be working to earn playing time.

Six guards make-up the rookie class as the Yeowomen coaching staff is looking to find their point guard of the present and the future. Manchester, Michigan, native Sarah Thompson, and Ellicott City, Maryland, product Ally Driscoll have been competing throughout preseason camp and will each have an opportunity to run the offense. Classmate Cheyenne Arthur has also been pushing them for time at the position.

"We are going to have to learn quick at the point. I am expecting some early growing pains, but I want to see them get better each day and be ready come conference time."

Maggie Gross, who is 6-foot-1, and Jasmine Sorrells, who checks in at 6-foot-2 bring added depth up front as they are two of six players on the roster at 6-foot or above.

Guards Mackenzie Michaels, Nichole Geist and Olivia Mills, along with forward Anna Cameron complete the freshmen class.

Oberlin will open the season with four straight road games, starting on Tuesday, November 15 against local rival Baldwin Wallace. In fact, nine of the first 11 battles for the Yeowomen will be away from Philips Gym. They will open the home slate on Monday, November 28, against Mount Union before opening conference play two days later against Wooster.

"We toughened up the non-conference schedule this year to help us get ready for conference later on. We need to test ourselves and learn from those early games on the areas we need to improve upon as the season moves forward."

Fans should note that all home games will be streamed live online for free on goyeo.com/stream.
