Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team flew past Kenyon on their senior day. Clinching the dominating 76-53 victory, the Crimson and Gold conclude the regular season 8-17 overall and 4-10 in conference play and advance to the NCAC tournament for the fifth straight year.
Prior to tip-off, Oberlin celebrated their seniors Ellie Pollock-Ballard, Angela Kumler, Lily Najmulski, and Katherine Csiszar. Following the ceremony, all four seniors started in the final home game of their careers.
To add to the exhilarating day, five Obies finished with double-digit points. Kumler registered a game-high 19 points, going 7-7 from the charity stripe, to pair with seven rebounds, six steals, four assists, and a block. Krystal Montas followed, tallying 15 points, three assists, and a pair of steals.
Ellie Pollock-Ballard notched 13 points while Najmulski and Gabby Peña-Hilzen recorded 11 points apiece and a combined 13 rebounds.
Kenyon produced an early lead in the opening two minutes of the match before Oberlin responded with 11 unanswered points. A behind-the-arc shot from Pollock-Ballard gained the advantage for the Crimson and Gold as they continued to roll past the Owls with four straight points from Peña-Hilzen and a layup from Montas. Kenyon posted one late triple as Oberlin maintained the 13-9 edge leading into the second quarter.
Back-to-back triples from Najmulski and Noa Brown extended Oberlin's lead early in the second session. The long-range shooting continued as Montas and Pollock-Ballard knocked down two more three-pointers with just over a minute remaining in the half. A layup from Csiszar stretched the Crimson and Gold's lead to 10 at 0:39 as Kenyon responded with their own layup. Securing a late jumper with four seconds remaining, Kumler helped Oberlin maintain their double-digit margin heading into the halftime break.
The Crimson and Gold continued their scoring surge, opening the third period with nine straight points, led by an early behind-the-arc shot from Montas and capped with a triple from Najmulski. Kenyon broke the streak with a layup but Montas quickly followed with a three-pointer to extend Oberlin's lead to 20 halfway through the frame. Both teams battled nearly point-for-point for the remainder of the period as the Crimson and Gold maintained a comfortable advantage in advance of the final quarter.
Stealing the ball from the Owls' possession, Kumler notched the fast break layup early in the final round, drawing the foul and adding the free throw bonus. The Yeowomen defense continued to produce as Najmulski posted a steal, setting Pollock-Ballard for the fast break three-pointer. Kenyon recorded a 9-0 run to reduce their deficit but Oberlin quickly responded with the next seven points.
With less than a minute remaining, the Owls recorded a triple, but a final three-pointer from Montas secured the senior-day victory for the Crimson and Gold.
"I couldn't be prouder of our team today. What a special way to close out the regular season and celebrate four incredible seniors in Katherine, Angela, Lily, and Ellie," Head Coach Stephany Dunmyer adds. "They've poured so much into this program, and today was about gratitude for all that they have given to this program! So happy that they could win their last game on their home floor!"
With the final conference game played, Oberlin will enter the NCAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and will travel to No. 3 John Carroll on Tuesday, February 24, for the First Round matchup. Evening tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. following the men's Quarterfinal game.
