Track Teams Have Final Tune-up at Ashland

Ashland, Ohio – The Oberlin College track and field teams had one final tune-up prior to next weekend's NCAC Championship meet as they competed at the Ashland University Alumni meet on Saturday.
 
The Yeowomen and Yeomen tested themselves against an array of teams from the Division II and Division I ranks.
 
Despite the lofty competition, first-year phenom Monique Newton still placed second out of 20 athletes in the shot put as she reset her own school record with a toss 44-08 on her third attempt. She would later improve upon her school record in the discus, besting a field of 19 with a winning throw of 146-04 on her first attempt.
 
Ave Spencer added another school record in the pole vault, clearing 10-11.75 (3.35m) to top Deysi Villarreal's mark of 10-11.50 (3.34m) that has stood since 2008.
 
In the running events, Caracol Haley clocked at 2:25.96 in the 800, while Deirdre Haren stopped the clock at 1:02.92 in the 100.
 
In the 5,000 meters Peyton Boughton (19:15.61) and Alyssa Hemler (19:36.15) placed 12th and 13th, respectively.
 
On the men's end Diego Cortes was 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:29.09. Kyle Tribble added another 10th-place showing in the 400 meters with a time of 51.24.
 
Senior Jerry Choi was 13th in the 400-meter hurdles as he completed the course in 57.86.
 
In the 5,000 meters Zachary Patti was 13th (16:54.84), while teammate Nick Care was two spots back with a time of 17:22.29.
 
In the 1,600-meter relay,  the Yeomen grouping of Ian Smith, James Tanford, Joshua Urso, Choi and Tribble combined to post a time of 3:27.24 to place fourth overall.
 
In the field events, Evan Finch covered 6-00.75 (1.80m) in the high jump and later added a 13th-place effort in the triple jump with a mark of 38-11.50 (11.87m). Jeffery Kawahara was ninth in the event at 40-05 (12.32m).
 
Next weekend's NCAC Championships are set to take place on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
