Box Score

Oberlin, Ohio – In the first-ever varsity contest at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex, the Oberlin College field hockey team put forth an inspiring first-half effort, but the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops pulled away in the second half to earn a 5-0 win.

The first 35 minutes of play were riveting as the Yeowomen created multiple scoring chances and earned three penalty corners. Sophomore Maureen Coffey displayed her attacking ability as she triggered six shots, all of which were on goal.

At 9:22 into the game, Coffey had a breakaway attempt that was saved by Bishops' goalie Jackie Feliciano. Coffey's initial shot hit off her pad and Feliciano also denied her put-back attempt. Later in the period Ariana Enzerink had another attempt off a corner that was blocked.

The Bishops would eventually take a 1-0 lead with 13 minutes left in the stanza, but Oberlin continued to fight.  Coffey had another strike that got by Feliciano, but Gabi Coty was in perfect position to prevent the equalizer as she was credited with a key defensive save.

The Yeowomen attempted nine shots in the first half with eight attempts being on frame.  Unfortunately the second half was a different story as Bishops were able to take control of the game.

Just 2:45 into the period OWU would increase its lead 2-0 and then back-to-back goals from Haley Savoie gave her a hat trick on the day and the Bishops a 4-0 lead. Paige Heaenig would add one more tally in the closing moments to cap the game's scoring.

Sophomore goalie Maggie Gossiaux did all she could, making a career-high 21 saves in the contest. Gossiaux turned away eight shots in the first half and 13 in the second half.

The Yeowomen will go right back to work tomorrow afternoon when they host Wittenberg University at 1 p.m.
