Box Score Granville, Ohio – Losing for the first time this season, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team fell to the Denison University Big Red, 10-6.
In a physical battle, the Yeowomen led 5-4 at the intermission, but were stifled by the Big Red's defense, being limited to one goal on five shots in the second half.
The Big Red opened the scoring just over two minutes into the affair when Carol Allen finished off a pass from Molly Chapman. Chapman finished the day with three helpers.
But
Grace Barlow would convert a free position opportunity to open the Yeowomen's scoring a minute and a half later.
Denison would strike back quickly as Chapman collected her second assist of the evening on a goal by Whitney Powel.
Halfway through the half, Oberlin would tie the game at 2 as Barlow registered another goal on the game. It came shorthanded as
Suzanna Doak was issued a yellow card prior to the goal, one of five handed out in the first half.
Two minutes later they would take the lead when first-year
Sara Phister scored an unassisted goal to give Oberlin the 4-3 edge.
But Denison would strike back with two goals of their own, one off a free position and the other came after
Emily Kipling had been shown a yellow card.
Barlow responded by registering her third goal of the half, bringing her season total to 17. And before the half,
Bronwen Schumacher converted a free position opportunity following a Denison yellow card to give Oberlin its 5-4 halftime lead.
The Big Red came out strong in the second half, scoring six unanswered goals to secure the victory.
Oberlin's final goal was an unassisted effort by first-year
Sloane Garelick, her second of the season.
Denison held a 21-10 shots on goal margin for the match as
Alexa L'Insalata played all 60 minutes in cage, making 11 saves. The Big Red also controlled the ground balls, 28-23, and draw controls, 11-7.
The loss drops the Yeowomen to 5-1, 1-1 in the NCAC, while the Big Red are now 5-2, 1-1 in the NCAC.
Oberlin will now prepare for a matchup with DePauw University, beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday in Greencastle, Ind.
