Final Stats From the Trip (10 Games)Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team finished its 10-game spring break trip with a record of 7-3 as they defeated Carleton College 11-8 and Williams College 19-11 on Wednesday afternoon at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona.
Carleton Recap With the score tied 8-8 in the top of the eighth, junior
Mitch Novak put the Yeomen on top with a double down the left field line to score
Ryan Bliss, and
Jeff Schweighoffer would follow with a sac fly. The Yeomen would tack on another insurance run in the ninth as
Andrew Hutson tripled and scored on
Darren Zaslau's groundout to short.
Mike McDonald got the win as he pitched the final three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out five to run his record to 2-1 on the season. In 16 innings worked this season, the reining NCAC Pitcher of the Week has allowed just one earned run and struck out 18 hitters.
It was a back-and-forth game for most the way as the Yeomen scored two in the first on run-producing singles from McDonald and Hutson. Carleton answered back with one in the home-half of the inning before plating four in the third to go up 5-2.
Oberlin evened the score at 5-5 by posting a single tally in the fourth and two in the fifth. Back-to-back triples from
Steve DiNanno and Bliss resulted in the run in the fourth while the Yeomen loaded the bases with nobody out to manufacture a pair in the fifth.
The Knights would reclaim the lead in the sixth with two runs, but the Yeomen kept swinging. Junior
Kyle Decker started the seventh with a triple to center and would score on Schweighoffer's line drive single to the left center gap. McDonald would then follow with his first home run of the season as he sent a towering 2-run shot down the left field line to put the Yeomen back out in front 8-7.
The Knights took advantage of an Oberlin error to get back to even in the bottom of the seventh, but the Yeomen would not be denied.
Oberlin pounded out 17 hits in the game. Decker, Schweighoffer, McDonald and Hutson each had three hits in the victory.
Williams Recap The Yeomen bats stayed hot in game two against the Ephs as they belted out 19 hits en route to the 19-11 win.
Schweighoffer went 5-for-5 with a walk, five RBIs and three runs scored. Decker, McDonald and Hutson also added three hits each in the victory.
Trailing 2-0, the Yeomen grabbed the lead with a four-run third inning. Decker got things going with an RBI double and then Schweighoffer came through with a two-run 'Baltimore Chop' double that bounced over the third basemen's head down the left field line. He would then come around to score on Hutson's shot to the left center gap to make it a 4-2 Yeomen lead.
The Ephs would answer back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-4, but the Yeomen matched that effort in the top of the fourth. Novak delivered a 2-RBI triple. Decker then benefitted from the swirling winds as his infield pop-up was not caught and in turn let Novak come across the dish.
However, Williams would not go away quietly – responding with another three runs in the bottom of the of the fourth to go up 8-7.
Oberlin would finally break the game open with a 5-run sixth. The Yeomen took advantage of back-to-back walks to start the inning and following a Decker single, Schweighoffer roped a 2-run double. McDonald then came to the plate and hit his second round-tripper of the day – a 3-run bomb that soared over the wall in left.
The Yeomen would add two more insurance runs in the seventh as freshman
Justin Cruz came through a two-out RBI double for his first collegiate hit. He would later score on yet another Schweighoffer hit.
Four more Yeomen would score in the eighth.
Blaise Dolcemaschio had a 2-RBI double to left center and Hutson also had an RBI in the inning. The last Yeomen RBI came in the ninth on McDonald's double to right center.
McDonald finished 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBIs. First Year
Noah Lipshie got the win as he worked 1.2 innings and allowed just one run. Senior
Drew Karlin tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, while
Machmud Makhmudov did not allow a hit and walked just one in the ninth.
Oberlin returns home to begin conference play on Saturday against Hiram College. First pitch of the four-game set will be at noon from Dill Field.
