Berea, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team improved to a perfect 3-0, knocking off the Alma College Scots 12-5 on Saturday afternoon at George Finnie Stadium on the campus of Baldwin Wallace University.
Junior
Kate Hanick led the Yeowomen attack with four goals and added an assist. Playing mainly in just the first half, first-year standout
Sara Phister continued her torrid start to the season with three goals, two assists and six draw controls. Sophomore
Grace Barlow also added her sixth and seventh goals of the year.
Oberlin opened up a 4-0 lead before the Scots got on the board. Barlow netted the game's first goal and then Phister followed with her first of three scores on the day. With a 4-1 lead in hand, a give-and-go play from Phister to Hanick resulted in another Yeowomen goal.
The Yeowomen later led 6-2 and would close out the opening frame on a 4-0 spurt. Rookie
Marissa Maxfield capped the first-half scoring with her third tally of the season to make it a 10-2 Oberlin advantage at the half.
In the second half the Yeowomen worked possession for much of the time. Senior
Sarah Andrews did add her second goal of the season, while Hanick capped her day with a free-position finish at the 5:26 mark to give her seven goals on the year.
The Oberlin backline was also impressive with 11 caused turnovers, while holding Alma to just 14-of-20 clear attempts. Oberlin won 14 of the game's 19 draw controls, out-shot Alma 28-17 and finished with a 25-17 edge in ground balls.
Rookie netminder
Alexa L'Insalata had a strong day in the cage, turning away eight Scots' shots in the victory.
The Yeowomen are back in action on Sunday, March 23 at Randolph. The opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
