Box Score

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team had the No. 22 ranked Wittenberg Tigers on their heels late in the second half, but ultimately finished on the wrong end of a 70-63 scoreline.

A Randy Ollie layup with 4:44 left to play cut the Tigers' lead down to three at 53-50.  Wittenberg pushed the margin back out to 10 with 2:10 to go, but Oberlin had one last charge in them.

The Yeomen clawed their way to within four, 64-60, using an 8-2 spurt that featured six points from Ollie and a layup from Miles Gueno. However, just 31 seconds remained in the game – forcing the Yeomen to foul. The Tigers' would make 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

The free throw line is where the game was decided as the Yeomen hindered their chances of an upset by shooting just 60-percent at the stripe with 21 makes on 35 attempts. Oberlin also struggled from beyond the arc where they were just 2-of-16 for a 12.5-percent clip.

Ollie continued his torrid play as he finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season and fifth of his career. The 6-foot-9 sophomore was once again a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor and is now 18-of-18 shooting over the last three games.

Senior Geoff Simpson added 15 points and seven rebounds, while rookie Jack Poyle chipped in with nine points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Yeomen trailed by 14, 30-16, late in the first half and eventually went into the locker room down 34-23 at the intermission.

The Tigers (17-4, 11-3 NCAC) appeared to be in control with a 49-36 lead in hand with 11:13 left to play, but the Yeomen methodically chipped away at the deficit to make it a 53-48 game with 6:20 still on the clock - setting up a thrilling five-minute finish.

The Yeomen shot 42.6-percent (20-of-47) overall, while the Tigers finished at 44.4-percent (24-of-54). Oberlin had a slight 37-34 edge in rebounding and a 28-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Oberlin, which fell to 6-15 and 3-11 in the NCAC, is back in action on Wednesday night at Allegheny. Tip-time is set for 8 p.m.
