Yeo Notes: Oberlin College vs. Denison University

Oberlin, Ohio – After two straight road games, the Oberlin College football team returns home to host the Denison Big Red in a 6 p.m. kickoff from the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Series: Oberlin trails in the all-time series against the Big Red 16-49-3… The first meeting between the two schools was in 1911 … The Yeomen have won seven of the last 12 games against the Big Red, including a 30-6 triumph at home in 2012 … In that victory Robin Witjes had the third-best receiving day in school history, totaling 222 yards, including an 89-yard touchdown (Watch).
 
Last Meeting Against The Big Red: In the 2013 matchup in Granville, the Yeomen won the statistical battle, but lost the game 27-14 … Oberlin gained 401 yards of offense as quarterback Lucas Poggiali threw for a career-high 293 yards with two touchdowns … Running back Blake Buckhannon was on the receiving end of 143 of Poggiali's yards as he caught six balls, including a 75-yard TD.
 
Last Time Out for Oberlin: The Yeomen had no answers for the No. 10 ranked Little Giants of Wabash, falling 70-10 in Crawfordsville, Indiana … Senior kicker Erickson Andrews connected on a season-long 41-yard kick to move into sole possession as the school's all-time field goal leader with 19 career makes … Quarterback Lucas Poggiali also ran in for his second rushing touchdown of the season.
 
Scouting The Big Red …
The Big Red are coming off an impressive 38-24 win against Wooster last week and have won two of their last four overall … Senior quarterback Brandon Sklenar guides the Big Red attack as he leads the NCAC in total offense with an average of 330.1 yards per game … On the season he has thrown for 1,861 yards and rushed for 450 … His 17 total touchdowns are the second highest total in the league … DuShawn Brown is Sklenar's favorite target as he leads the conference with 56 catches and averages an NCAC-best 114.6 yards per game.
 
In Search of One …
The Yeomen enter Saturday's game in search of their first win at their new home, the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex … Oberlin's three games thus far have not gone in its favor, falling 63-10 to Wooster (Sept. 20), 48-10 to Wittenberg (Sept. 27) and 54-14 to DePauw (Oct. 11).
 
So You Are Saying There is a Chance …
Oberlin currently sits at 2-5 with three games remaining … If the Yeomen can win out they can finish 5-5 for the first time since 2008.
 
Moving on Up …
Sophomore Justin Cruz has 647 yards receiving and is looking to move his way up the record book over the final three games … He trails single-season leader Rickey Valenzuela by 343 yards as Valenzuela totaled a school-record 990 yards in 2001 … Cruz will need to average 114 yards per game over the final three contests to reach that mark.
 
Tackling Trio …
The Yeomen defense features three players with over 40 tackles … Senior Max Schenk leads the team and is ranked 10th in the NCAC with 60 stops … First-year Bennett Jackson is second on the squad with 45 tackles, while Tim Kondo checks in with 44 … Each player ranks in the top 22 in the NCAC.
 
Hit the Brakes …
The Yeomen defense will have a tough challenge in trying to slow the quick-paced offense of Denison … The Big Red have run the most offensive plays of any team in the NCAC with 555 … In comparison, Wooster is second in the league with 519 plays … Unfortunately, the Yeomen are last in the NCAC with 430 offensive snaps.
 
Cashing In …
The Yeomen have scored on 94.1-percent of the their trips in the red zone, coming away with points on 16-of-17 opportunities so far this season … Oberlin has scored 11 touchdowns (7-rush, 4-pass) and made five field goals … While the team's percentage ranks second in the NCAC, the Yeomen need to do a better job in creating scoring opportunities as their 17 total chances are the fewest in the league.
