Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College field hockey team took conference-leading DePauw University to the brink on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately finished on the wrong side of a, 2-1, decision.
Playing in her first game of the season, 2012 All-NCAC First-Team selection
Claire Yeske made a big impact. In the final minute, she put the Yeowomen on the board with a laser shot from the top of the circle. The goal came off a penalty corner service from freshman
Jennifer Krakower. It was the first collegiate point of her career and the goal was Yeske's fourth of her career.
With the clock continuing to work down, the Yeowomen fought to earn another penalty corner, and as time expired, Yeske had her attempt to tie the game turned away by DePauw keeper Maggie Steele.
The Yeowomen defense has been tremendous all season and today was no different as they limited a Tigers' unit that averaged 3.61 goals per game last season en route to making it all the way to the NCAA Semifinals.
"I was very pleased with our effort and level of play," Head Coach
Anna Baeth said. "The result last year against them was not pretty, and to play like we did today is really encouraging."
The first DePauw goal of the game came in the sixth minute off the stick of Maggie Campbell with Paige Henry earning the assist. Later in the first half, Oberlin suffered some bad luck when Kate Jovanovic's shot hit off a Yeowomen defender's stick and redirected into the goal.
It would remain a 2-0 game at halftime and the stout Oberlin defense would keep the Tigers scoreless for the entire second half. Goalie
Carmen Azevedo was simply sensational as she finished with 13 saves in the game.
The Yeowomen, who were much improved in controlling possession in the second half, finished with three shots in the game. DePauw attempted 21 shots and had 15 on frame.
DePauw, which ranked 16
th in the nation before dropping out of the top 25 this week, improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC. With the setback, Oberlin fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Yeowomen have a short turnaround as they host Earlham College tomorrow at 11 a.m.
