Oberlin Starts Strong at NCAC Indoor Championships

Wooster, Ohio – The 2013 NCAC Indoor Championships got underway on Friday afternoon and the Oberlin College track and field teams wasted no time in accumulating points.
 
Through six scored events, the Yeowomen rest in second place with 50 points, while the Yeomen sit in fourth with 13 points through four events.
 
Highlighting the day for the Yeomen was senior Alex Guo who won the men's triple jump by besting his own school record with a mark of 45-09.75. Evan Finch added two team points by placing seventh at 41-04.25.
 
In the lone running event that was contested as a final on the day, junior Molly Martorella blistered the field in the women's 5,000 as she completed the course in 17:24.75. Her timestamp was 30 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and was good for the 14th fastest time in the country so far this season.
 
The Yeowomen racked up 15 points in the weight throw, claiming spots three through five. Sophomore Tiffany Henry ended in third place by breaking her own school record with a toss of 48-07.50. Rookie Larisa Lewis was fourth with a heave if 45-01, while classmate Caitlyn Grubb was close behind at 44-06.25.
 
The Oberlin women also performed well in the jumping events. Senior Jasmine Owens was third in the triple jump, covering 34-07, while first-year Caroline Summa continued to impress by checking in third in the high jump at 4-11.75. Sophomore Lauren Washington was seventh in the event.
 
In the prelims, the Yeowomen qualified three runners in the 60 meters with Margaret Miller finishing fourth with a school-record time of 8.18. Sophia Brancazio followed in fifth at 8.29, while Owens was sixth in 8.30. The threesome also all qualified in the 200 meters.
 
Oberlin placed two women in the finals of the 400 as Marissa Clardy was the second fastest qualifier at 1:00.10, while Katrina Gelwick was fourth at 1:01.08. In the 800, Amanda Gracia will represent Oberlin in the finals as she qualified fifth in 2:24.88.
 
For the Yeomen, junior Quinn Hull moved onto the finals in the 800 as he was fifth overall in 1:58.77. Sophomore Jerry Choi also got into the finals of the 200, placing eighth in 23.28.
 
Day two of the NCAC Indoor Championships get underway tomorrow morning with field events starting at 10:30 a.m.
