Oberlin Track & Field Shines at Greater Cleveland Championships

Berea, Ohio – For the second week in a row the Oberlin College track and field teams competed at Baldwin Wallace University, this time taking on area foes in the Greater Cleveland Championship Meet.

“This was certainly a turning-the-corner type of meet for us as we get closer to conferences,” Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. “Many strong performances across the board and efforts we can build upon moving forward.”

The Yeowomen made a statement in the first running event of the evening, claiming the top seven spots in the women's 5,000 meters en route to securing 29 team points. The top five Oberlin finishers all ended within one second of one another. Caroline Martin won the race in 18:55.02, while Lindsay Neal (18:55.28), Sarah Jane Kerwin (18:55.77), Hannah Wolfe (18:55.79) and Lauren Taylor rounded out the top five.

In the mile sophomore standout Emma Lehmann checked in second overall with a mark of 5:23.55. The Yeowomen's 4x200 relay team consisting of Sophia Brancazio, Margaret Miller, Ashley Parish and Marissa Clardy also turned in a second-place showing by completing the course in 1:52.20. Clardy later returned to win the 500 in a school-record time of 1:19.88. Teammate Nora Ryan was fourth at 1:27.59.

In the 200 meter dash the Yeowomen had four runners earn points for the team. Senior Jasmine Owens led the way with a fourth-place finish as she touched the tape in 27.62. Amethyst Carey (27.67), Miller (27.69) and Parish (27.71) claimed spots six through eight.

In the field events, Lauren Washington finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 4-11, while teammate Caroline Summa was also fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 31-04.50.

Senior Alex Guo started the day for the Yeomen by winning the triple jump in commanding fashion with a season-best mark 44-10.25. He was also fourth in the long jump with a season-best standard of 21-05.50. Teammate Jeff Kawahara was second in the triple jump with a leap of 39-05.75.

Nate Danko followed Guo's lead and added another win for the Yeomen as he came away victorious in the pole vault by clearing 13-05.75.

In the 3,000 meters the Yeomen displayed their strong distance corps by finishing in spots one through four. Leo Harrington led the way with a season-best effort of 8:58.05. Daniel Johnson was close behind in 9:01.39.

Oberlin had three point producers in the 5,000 meters with rookie Gabe Brown guiding the group in 16:26.51 which was good for fourth place overall. Fellow newcomer Robert Moreton added a third-place effort in the mile at 4:34.08.

In the 200 meter dash sophomore Jerry Choi recorded six points for the Yeomen with his third-place effort of 23.33. In four times the distance in the 800 meter run, Quinn Hull was second at 2:01.60, just four tenths of a second out of first.

The Yeowomen ended third out of six teams with 133.5 points, while the Yeomen were second with 123.5 points. Both teams will be back in action next Friday at Denison University.
