Box Score Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team rallied in the second half, but it wasn't enough, as the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops held off the Yeomen, 28-14, on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Oberlin fell to 2-7 overall and 1-7 in the NCAC. The Bishops improved to 5-4 and 4-4 in the league.
The Yeomen managed just 208 yards of offense with 106 coming on the ground and 102 through the air. Sophomore quarterback
Lucas Poggiali finished 14-of-28 passing with one interception and no touchdowns. He also added 28 yards rushing.
Moses Richardson led the ground game with 38 yards on 10 carries, while
Nick Theofilos added 31 yards and a touchdown on five rushes.
Adam Niec and
Justin Cruz each caught five passes. Niec totaled 34 yards while Cruz checked in with 30.
Battling high winds and a stiff Bishops' defense, the Yeomen offense was unable to get into a rhythm in the first half, totaling just 79 yards and four first downs.
In the opening half the Bishops were able to orchestrate 11-play, 8-play, and 15-play drives to score touchdowns and claim a 21-0 lead at the break.
On the Bishops' first scoring drive an Oberlin pass interference penalty on 3
rd-and-goal gave them a new set of downs and ultimately allowed Kevin Herman to run it in from 2-yards out.
On the first play of the second quarter, OWU quarterback Mason Espinosa hooked up with Dave Mogilnicki for a 20-yard TD. On their next series, Kevin Mulumba capped the 62-yard drive that took 6:01 off the clock by running it over the left guard for a 3-yard TD.
Dan Bolotsky, who forced a fumble on the game's first play, sparked the Yeomen in the third quarter by intercepting Espinosa and returning 30 yards for a touchdown. It was the sophomore's first-career interception and touchdown.
Early in the fourth quarter OWU would push its lead back out to 28-7, as Kevin Herman would score his second TD of the day – this time from a yard out.
Following the score a 36-yard kickoff return by
Blake Buckhannon put the Yeomen in business out to the OWU 46-yardline. Theofilos would eventually cap the 9-play drive with a 1-yard plunge to make it a two-score game with 10:24 left to play. The drive featured a 12-yard scramble by Poggiali and a 15-yard pass play to Niec.
Unfortunately, it would be the last time the Yeomen offense would touch the ball. The Bishops iced the win by running off all 10:24 that remained, running 15 plays and racking up five first downs along the way. The game eventually ended with Kevin Herman being tackled on the Yeomen's 1-yardline.
Defensively,
Zach Kisley and
Kyle Kessler each tied for a game-high with 11 tackles. Sophomore
C.J. Ihle added seven tackles and three sacks to run his season sack total to 7.5.
Oberlin concludes its season next Saturday at home against Hiram College at 1 p.m. It will be the final time the Yeomen play at Savage Stadium, as next season they will play inside the new state-of-the-art Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
