Bethany, WV—The Oberlin College field hockey team went on the road for their only midweek match of the season, falling to the Bethany College Bison, 4-1.
The Yeowomen are now 4-11 overall this season and have a conference record of 3-8. Following the victory, the Bison are now 2-9.
Oberlin fell behind early as the Bison scored just four minutes into the match off a penalty corner. 15 minutes later, Bethany doubled their lead when Lauren Rao was able to dribble around some Yeowomen defenders and hammer a shot past goalkeeper
Carmen Azevedo.
The Yeowomen pulled back into the contest 10 minutes into the second half when
Jodi Helsel was able to score on the breakaway, netting her third goal of the season.
The Bison would respond quickly, adding to their lead five minutes later. Taylor Solomon scored her fifth goal of the season by finishing up a shot that deflected off Azevedo's pads. Solomon would score the fourth and final goal for Bethany four minutes later to put the match out of reach.
Offensively, the Yeowomen were outshot, 22-12, by the Bison, who also held a 10-3 edge in penalty corners.
Helsel paced Oberlin's offense with five total shots, three on goal. First-year
Emily Cocco also tallied four shots, all of which were on goal.
Azevedo made nine saves in the match, while her counterpart Jacqueline Harrison was forced to make eight saves.
The Yeowomen will play their final home matches of the season this weekend, starting on Friday when The College of Wooster comes to town for a 4:30 p.m. start. On Sunday, Oberlin host the Kenyon College Ladies starting at noon.
