Richmond, IN—The Oberlin College field hockey team completed the season sweep of the Earlham College Quakers on Saturday with a convincing 4-1 victory.
The Yeowomen used great offensive pressure and solid defensive play, with contributions from both first years and returners, to earn the conference victory.
"Earlham gave us a good game today, but the way
Emma Hahn,
Claire Miller, and
Marissa Blackwell all stepped up, really helped this team," said Head Coach
Anna Baeth.
Freshman
Olivia DeToma got Oberlin on the board early as she scored just under two minutes into the contest.
Jodi Helsel registered the assist on the goal. For DeToma, that was her sixth goal of the season, which is tied for the team lead. The play also marked Helsel's fifth assist of the season, which leads the team.
Less than five minutes later Helsel would score her second goal of the season, which extended the Yeowomen's early cushion and proved to be the game-winning goal.
The Quakers cut into the Oberlin lead before halftime as Tara Burns finished off a pass from Neo Khalema to make it a 2-1 Oberlin advantage going into halftime.
Oberlin continued to pepper the Quakers goalkeeper with shots in the second half and broke through in the 55
th minute when Miller, a freshman, netted her third goal of the season.
Just over two minutes later the Yeowomen would seal the deal when
Ariana Enzerink scored the sixth goal of her freshman campaign, tying her with DeToma for the team lead.
Carmen Azevedo wasn't called into action for the Yeowomen very much, but she did finish the match with two saves.
The Yeowomen outshot the Quakers, 24-5, and held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. 19 of the Yeowomen's shots were on goal as Earlham's keeper, Helen Titcomb, made 15 saves.
DeToma and
Claire Yeske led the way for the Yeowomen offensively as they each took five shots.
Oberlin will look to carry this momentum into tomorrows contest against the DePauw University Tigers. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Greencastle, Ind.
