Box Score
Springfield, Ohio – Looking for its first win of 2013, the Oberlin College men's basketball team battled the Wittenberg Tigers tooth and nail for 40 minutes, but in the end the Yeomen were on the wrong end of a 51-47 decision at Pam Evans Smith Arena.
The Yeomen trailed 46-44 with just under four minutes left to play, but then after taking good care of the ball all game long, they turned it over on three straight trips down the floor. However, the Tigers only increased their lead by two during the stretch, and an old-fashioned 3-point play by
Andrew Fox made it a 48-47 game with 1:11 left.
Oberlin was able to get a stop on the Tigers next possession, but then
Geoff Simpson got whistled for a charge with just 23 seconds left. The Yeomen were then forced to foul, which resulted in the Tigers going up three.
Austin Little had a look from beyond the arc to tie it with six seconds left, but his attempt fell short.
Little led the Yeomen with 10 points, while
Randy Ollie and Fox each added nine points in the setback.
No more than five points separated the two teams throughout the game. A
Miles Gueno triple-hit with 6:02 remaining gave Oberlin a 42-39 lead, but Wittenberg would quickly get the score back to even to setup the exciting finish.
The Tigers benefited from a large discripency at the free throw line as they hoisted 31 attempts from the stripe, compared to just seven for the Yeomen. Oberlin did cash in six of those attempts for an 85.7-percent success rate, while Wittenberg made just 17 of their 31 triggers for 54.8-percent.
The Yeomen shot 17-of-45 (37.8%) from the floor, which included an impressive 7-of-17 (41.2%) effort from downtown. Wittenberg finished at 38.1-percent (16-of-42), but was just 2-of-16 (12.5) from 3-point land.
Sam Collins led the Tigers with 21 points, while center Scott Masin added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Oberlin will be back in action on Wednesday night when it plays host to Allegheny College at 7:30 p.m.
