Yeowomen Start 2013 on a High Note

Christina Marquette scored a season-high 30 points on Wednesday night.
Box Score

Oberlin, Ohio – Sophomore Christina Marquette scored 23 of her season-high 30 points in the second half to propel the Oberlin College women's basketball team to a 67-61 victory over Adrian College on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.

Marquette finished 10-of-23 from the floor and also added team-highs in rebounds (7) and assists (5). In the first half it was junior Malisa Hoak who kept Oberlin in the game as she netted 12 of her season-high 17 points in the opening frame.

The game was very nip and tuck throughout as no more than eight points ever separated the two teams along the way. With five minutes to play the score was tied at 53, but the Yeowomen were able to pull away with a 10-2 run over the next 3:20 to create some breathing room.

The Bulldogs would shrink the lead down to four, 63-59, on a Antoinea McElroy layup with 23 seconds left, but clutch free-throw shooting from Lillian Jahan and Marquette in the closing moments secured the win for the Yeowomen.

The first half featured multiple runs by both teams. The Yeowomen started off hot and built up an 8-0 lead before the Bulldogs battled back to tie the game at 10 with 10:37 left in the frame. Oberlin would later use another 8-0 spurt that featured triple-hits from Marquette and Lindsey Bernhardt to take a 24-16 lead, but once again Adrian would respond. The visitors would catch fire in the closing minutes of the session to claim a 30-28 lead at the break.

Adrian had four players finish in double figures with LaQwanna Dockery leading the way with 15 points.

With the win Oberlin was able to conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule at 7-5, already surpassing the team's win total from a season ago.

The Yeowomen have a busy weekend ahead as they host Ohio Wesleyan on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. before traveling to Kenyon on Saturday for another 7:30 p.m. tip.
