Yeowomen Drop NCAC Opener at Denison

Box Score

Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College field hockey team battled NCAC power Denison University neck-and-neck for 70 minutes, but in the end the home Big Red were able to nip the Yeowomen by a 3-0 margin on Saturday afternoon.

The Big Red are coming off a 2011 season in which they finished 18-2 and made an NCAA Tournament appearance, yet the new-look Yeowomen squad was able to give them fits all game long which made first-year Head Coach Anna Baeth very proud of her team's efforts.

“I thought we played very well today, especially in the second half,” Baeth said. “Keeping a team like Denison off of the scoreboard in a half says a lot about what this team is capable of doing. We were also much more aggressive on offense over the final 35 minutes, which was very good to see.”

The Big Red, who upended the Yewomen by an 8-2 score line in both battles last season, recorded all three of their goals in the first half. However, the Yeowomen really stepped up their level of play over the final 35 minutes.

After squeezing off just two shots and one penalty corner in the first half, OC worked to earn four corners and five shots in the second stanza. Of those five triggers, three were on goal. Karin Yoshida led the Yeowomen with four shots, while Rachel Zuckerman had three shots fly off her stick. Each player had two shots on frame.

Netminder Kiran Puri recored five saves in the first half before giving way to sophomore Carmen Azevedo who made seven stops in the second session.

Oberlin will look to build off this promising performance when they return to action at home against DePauw next Saturday at 11 a.m.
