Defense Shines in a Loss at Allegheny

Box Score

Meadville, PA – The Oberlin College defense recorded six takeaways, but the offense struggled again for the second straight week as the Yeomen fell to the Allegheny College Gators 15-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The Yeomen defense was simply outstanding as their ball-hawking style resulted in four Allegheny fumbles and two interceptions. Matt Richard, who had a team high six tackles, scooped up one of the loose balls, as did Dane Stritt, Tim Kondo and Clay Eaton. Zach Kisley and David Kalgren also added interceptions.

Four out of the Yeomen's last five possessions of the first half started off a turnover, yet all they got out of it was a 35-yard field goal from Erickson Andrews with 1:10 left in the second quarter. Kalgren's fourth pick of the season came on the final play of the first half and he nearly returned it for a touchdown before being dragged down following a 39-yard return. The play marked the fifth Yeomen theft of the half.

Following a 10-play, 72-yard drive to start the second half, Oberlin would miss a 20-yard field goal in which a poor snap played a part. However, it was Andrews' second misfire of the game.

With the Yeomen still clinging to a 3-0 lead, the Gators would finally break through on a two-yard TD plunge by Ben Perko with 5:56 left in the third. The score capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive that took 3:20 off of the clock.

Trailing 7-3 the Yeomen defense came up big once again as Stritt recovered a fumble on the Gators' own 37 yard-line with 10:56 left to play. However, the Yeomen did nothing with the opportunity – gaining five yards on four plays before giving the ball right back on downs.

Allegheny would then make it a two-score game courtesy of a two-yard TD run by Tim Werley. It appeared as if Allegheny would have to settle for a field goal as the Yeomen stuffed them three times on the goal line, but a pass interference call on third down gave the Gators a second chance to punch it in for six. A late safety by Allegheny finished the game's scoring.

The Yeomen continued their struggles on third down, converting just 2-of-16 chances in the game. Lucas Poggiali finished 19-of-33 for 170 yards and one INT. Moses Richardson was the top ground gainer with 31 yards on 10 carries, while Dan Weintraub and Robin Witjes each checked in with 51 receiving yards.

The Yeomen will be back in action next Saturday at Kenyon College.
