Football Falls on Homecoming to Chicago

Box Score

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team had their homecoming spoiled by the University of Chicago as the Maroons came to town and defeated the Yeomen 28-9 on Saturday afternoon.

Not only did the Yeomen have to worry about the Maroons, the weather was also a factor as two long delays in the second half took away from the flow and rhythm of the game.

The Yeomen offense could never really get going under freshman quarterback Lucas Poggiali who threw from just 62 yards on 9-of-21 passing. Oberlin did have a diverse ground attack that totaled 133 yards, with Moses Richardson leading the way with 47 yards on 12 carries. Poggiali also rushed for 34 yards and scored the lone Yeomen touchdown of the day. Justin Williams added 42 yards on just four rushes.

The Yeomen cashed in three points on their first drive of the game, courtesy of an Erickson Andrews 35-yard field goal, but Chicago responded with a 7-play, 60-yard drive that was capped off with a 37-yard TD catch by Dee Brizzolara to lead 7-3 after one period.

Early in the second quarter, the Yeomen special teams gave them a boost as Shawn Chrapczynski blocked a Chicago punt that was scooped up by Peter Morris and returned to the Chicago 27-yardline.  Just four plays later, Poggiali would score his first-career TD on a six-yard bootleg to put OC up 9-7 where it would remain heading into halftime.

A forced fumble by Clay Eaton with 6:17 left in the opening half created another chance for the Yeomen to get some points, but Andrews missed a 34-yard field goal attempt.

In the second half it was all Maroons as they scored on their first possession of the third quarter when Brizzzolara hauled in a 66-yard TD catch.  Oberlin's next three possessions resulted in two punts and a fumble, with the turnover putting Chicago in position to add another TD with 3:39 left in the quarter.

After another Yeomen drive that stalled out, the rain came falling with 1:29 left in the third period and forced the game to be delayed for nearly one hour.

Following a second delay at the start of the fourth quarter, the Maroons would end any threat of a Yeomen comeback by orchestrating an 11-play, 57-yard drive that took 6:05 off of clock and ended with a 13-yard TD run by Miguel Maseda.

Kirby Livingston and Jake Danko led the Yeomen defense with nine tackles each. Eaton also added eight stops and 2.5 sacks.

The Yeomen will look to forget about this one when they return to NCAC play next week at Allegheny College. Fans should note that today's game against Chicago will air tonight on SportsTimeOhio (STO) at 11:30 p.m. and again on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
