Meadville, PA – The Oberlin College baseball team turned in a lackluster effort on Sunday afternoon, which resulted in the Allegheny College Gators winning both games of their doubleheader to complete the four-game series sweep. The Yeomen fell 5-1 in game one before going down 14-0 in game two.
In game one, Allegheny jumped on the Yeomen early as they used three hits combined with two Oberlin errors to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Oberlin starter
Mattie DeDoes.
Oberlin was able to respond in the second inning, as
Zach Jaspers came through with a two-out RBI single to put the Yeomen on the board. However, Oberlin had a chance to add some more, but left the bases loaded.
After the rocky first inning, DeDoes was able to settle down nicely as he kept the Gators off of the scoreboard in innings two through four. In the fifth inning, a leadoff walk to Eric Hansen came back to bite DeDoes as he came around to score on Ben Lowmaster's single through the right side.
DeDoes went all six innings as he scattered six hits over 117 pitches of work. He fanned three and waked just two. Of his five runs allowed, just one was earned as he fell to 2-2 on the year.
The Yeomen threatened a comeback attempt in the sixth as they brought the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded and just one out, but Gators' pitcher Eric Brandt was able to induce a double play groundout to get out of the jam.
In game two, the Yeomen were never really in it for the start as once again the Gators would score four runs in the first – this time coming off of
Kevin Swanson.
Allegheny would add two more in the second and four more in the fourth to effectively put the game out of reach.
Swanson lasted just 3.1 innings as he allowed eight runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks.
Oberlin had more errors (7) than hits (6) in the ball game.
Sean Cohen was the only Yeoman with multiple hits as he went 2-for-2.
The Yeomen, who have now dropped seven in a row, fall to 16-18 overall and 5-7 in the NCAC East. They return to action next weekend when they play host to the College of Wooster.
