Yeowomen Fall in OT to Ohio Wesleyan

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team jumped on Ohio Wesleyan early on, but unfortunately the Bishops were able to battle back to come away with an 81-72 overtime victory on Saturday evening at Philips Gym. 

The Yeowomen were led by freshman stalwart Christina Marquette who had a game-high 25 points to go along with a game-best 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior Kelly Warlich added 18 points and seven boards, while Malisa Hoak chipped in with 12 points and six assists.

Oberlin led 17-8 with 15:18 to go in the opening half, but the Bishops would eventually fight back to take their first lead of the game, 24-23, at the 9:18 mark. An 8-1 Yeowomen run that featured five points by Hoak and a triple-hit by Marquette put them on top 31-25 with just under four minutes remaining in the frame. Oberlin wouldeventually enter the locker room up 39-35.

The second half was nip-and-tuck throughout as the stanza featured seven lead changes and four ties. Oberlin found itself down five, 65-60, with 3:22 left to play until Marquette would answer with one of her five 3-pointers on the night. With just 97 seconds left, the Yeowomen tied it at 65 on it on layup by Allison Gannon off a beautiful entry pass from Hoak.

Following a pair of missed opportunities by the Bishops in the closing moments, Oberlin had a chance to win it in regulation. After working some clock, the ball wound up in Gannon's hands inside the paint, but her short jumper try was too strong.

OWU, who which had the night off last night while the Yeowomen beat the Scots, took advantage of the tired Yeowomen as it controlled the overtime period by out-scoring OC 16-7. The Bishops had a 71-69 lead with 2:32 left in the extra frame, but would push it out to seven, 76-69, with 57 seconds left. Oberlin would get it down to four, but it was too little too late to complete the comeback.

After shooting 45.5-percent (15-of-33) in the first half, the Yeowomen went just 10-of-37 (27%) the rest of the way, including a 1-of-9 effort in OT. For the game they finished at 35.7-percent (25-of-70).  The Bishops shot 40.8-percent (29-of-71) in the victory.

Oberlin did win the rebounding war 49-44, but was hindered by 23 turnovers that translated into 20 OWU points.

With the loss Oberlin fell to 6-16 and 3-10 in the NCAC, while the Bishops improved to 8-13 and 4-8 in the league.

Oberlin returns to action on Wednesday night at Kenyon College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
