Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team fell to the visiting the Scots of Alma, 71-57, on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The Yeomen had three players finish in double figures with junior
Geoff Simpson leading the way with 15 points to go along with a career- and game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman center
Randy Ollie dropped in 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while
Andrew Fox chipped in with 10 of his own. Both he and Ollie added six boards.
The Yeomen got off to a slow start as they fell behind 11-2 in the early going, however, they would storm right back to take a 12-11 lead on Ollie's back-down layup at the 11:26 mark. (
Watch). Later in the half, a strong finish by
Miles Gueno at the rim (
Watch) would make it a 20-16 Oberlin lead, but the Scots would closeout the frame with a mini 9-4 spurt to claim a 29-24 advantage at the half.
In the second half the Yeomen and Scots were tied at 36 with 13:13 to go, but Alma used a 15-4 run to grab a 51-40 lead at the 8:27 mark. However, the Yeomen would not go down without a fight as a triple-hit by Fox (
Watch) would cut the Yeomen deficient down to six, 54-48, with four minutes left to play, but they would get no closer the rest of the way.
Alma was able to seal the game down the stretch with some clutch free throw shooting as they made 12-of-13 charity tosses in the final two minutes and finished 20-of-22 at the line in the game.
The Scots had four players in double figures with Bradon Krause leading the way with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
The Yeomen shot 38.2-percent (21-of-55) compared to the Scots' 44-percent (22-of-50) clip. Oberlin's free throw woes also continued – making just 10-of-17 freebies for a 58.8-percent success rate.
Oberlin out-scored Alma 28-18 in the paint, but the Scots bench bunch out-scored their Yeomen counterparts 25-9.
The Yeomen will have a quick turn around as they go right back to work on Monday night when they host NCAC foe Denison at 8 p.m.
