Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team pushed Case Western to the brink, but the visiting Spartans were able to withstand the Yeomen's late surge to escape town with a 58-53 win on Saturday afternoon at Philips.
The Yeomen had three players finish in double figures with
Andrew Fox leading the way with 14 points to go along with a game-high eight boards.
Geoff Simpson added 13, while junior point guard
Emmanuel Lewis chipped in with 10 on 4-of-6 shooting.
Oberlin trailed by 14, 46-32, with 10 minutes left to play, but they stepped up their defensive pressure and got hot on offense to get right back in the game. A
Austin Little jumper with 4:50 remaining shrunk the Yeomen deficit down to two at 49-47.
The Spartans would eventually extend their cushion back up to six, 55-49, with 1:23 to go, but the Yeomen did not go down quietly. A Fox layup and a jumper by Lewis would again make it a two-point game at 55-53 with 29 seconds left. However, clutch free throw shooting in the closing moments by the Spartans allowed them to hang on for the win.
In the first half the Yeomen trailed by 12, 24-12, with 4:27 left in the frame, but they would use a 12-5 run to close out the session and make it a 29-24 Spartan advantage at the break.
The Yeomen had no answer for Tim Chung who came off the bench for the Spartans to lead all scorers with 22 points. In total the Spartans' bench bunch out-scored its Oberlin counterparts 39-0 – marking the second straight game the Yeomen reserves have been shutout.
Oberlin shot 38.9-percent (21-of-54) from the floor, but again struggled at the charity stripe where they went just 5-of-11 (45.5%). Case checked in at 44-percent shooting – making 22-of-50 shots in the contest.
The Yeomen will be back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Hiram College. Tip-time is set for 8 p.m.
