Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team fought hard, but the visiting Beavers of Bluffton were able to pull away late to get by the Yeowomen, 74-53, on Tuesday night at Philips Gym.
The Yeowomen, who just landed from their west coast swing on Monday morning, appeared to show signs of being tired as they missed multiple shots from in tight and were allowing the Beavers many good looks on their offensive end. With that being said they still found a way to hang tough for 34 minutes of the game.
Allison Gannon led the Yeowomen offense with 15 points – 13 of which came in the second half, while junior classmate
Malisa Hoak added 14 points with 11 coming in the first half. Hoak shot 5-of-8 from the floor, which included a career-high four threes on six attempts. Sophomore
Christina Marquette and rookie
Lindsey Bernhardt added eight points apiece in the setback. Marquette, who came in averaging 22.2 points per game, was held in single digits for the first time this season.
The first half was very nip-and-tuck throughout as no more than seven points separated the two teams for most of the way. Five straight Oberlin points from Hoak cut the Yeowomen deficient to four, 27-23, with 3:25 left in the frame, but the Beavers would close out the session with a 6-0 spurt to lead 33-23 at the break.
After falling behind by as many as 15 in the early part of the second half, the Yeowomen continued fight. An old fashioned 3-point-play by Gannon put Oberlin within five at 54-49 with 7:04 left to play. However, the Yeowomen's tired legs would eventually catch up with them cause from that point on the Beavers would rip off a 20-4 run to finish out the game. The only Oberlin points during the stretch came courtesy of four Gannon free-throw makes.
The Beavers shot an impressive 53.7-percent (29-of-54) on the night, while Oberlin checked in at 37.5-percent (18-of-48), which did include a stalwart 36.8-percent (7-of-19) effort from downtown.
Bluffton out-rebounded Oberlin 34-23 and out-scored them 30-18 in the paint. With the win, Bluffton improved to 4-0, while Oberlin fell to 4-2.
The Yeowomen will look to get back on track when they play host to Otterbein on Thursday night. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
