Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team held a four-point half-time lead, but the visiting Big Red of Denison University used a big second-half surge to get by the Yeomen, 70-56, on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
Oberlin was paced by a game-high 19 points from junior
Andrew Fox. The Tempe, Arizona, native nearly recorded his eighth double-double of the season as he finished with nine rebounds. Rookie
Miles Gueno - making his first-career start - added a career-high 13 points. Fellow first-year
Jesse Neugarten chipped in with 10 points to go along with a career-high seven assists.
In the opening half, the Yeomen found themselves down 10, 20-10, with 8:34 to go in the period. However, OC responded with a 10-0 run in less than a two-minute span to tie the game at 20. The spurt featured five points from Fox and a triple-hit from Gueno.
Oberlin (6-12, 1-8 NCAC) continued to keep up the pressure and built up a 30-24 lead in the closing moments, but a Dimonde Hale layup just before the first-half horn made it a 30-26 lead in favor of the Yeomen at the break.
In the second half, the Yeomen went up 38-33 thanks to a
Geoff Simpson 3-pointer with 16:30 remaining. However, from there the Big Red would answer with an 11-0 run to claim 44-38 lead at the 13:17 mark.
Denison (7-11, 4-5 NCAC) would eventually extend its lead out to 10, 53-43, with 7:44 left to play. Oberlin continued to fight, shrinking the deficit down to five, 57-52, at the 4:16 mark. Unfortunately, Denison would not allow the Yeomen to get any closer, scoring the game's next nine points to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
Once again the Yeomen struggled on the glass as the Big Red out-rebounded them 39-25, which included a 16-4 margin on the offensive end.
The Yeomen shot 41.7-percent (20-of-48) in the loss, while the Big Red checked in at 44.8-percent (25-of-56).
Denison had four different players score in double figures, led by 18 points from Hale.
Oberlin returns to action on Saturday afternoon when Wittenberg University comes to town for a 3 p.m. showdown.
