Oberlin, Ohio- The Oberlin College women's basketball team fell in their game against the visiting Allegheny Gators at Philips Gym on Wednesday night. The final score of the hard-fought NCAC match up was 68-63.
The Yeowomen were led by sophomore sensation
Allison Gannon who was simply dominant in the post. She had a career-high 29 points to go along with five rebounds, all while shooting 13-for-19 from the floor.
Kelly Warlich was the only other Yeowoman in double figures with 10.
Christina Marquette was quiet with only eight points, but found other ways to contribute as she had seven boards and five assists.
Lillian Jahan added a spark for the Yeowomen with seven points, four assists, and seven rebounds.
In the first half, the Yeowomen jumped out to a quick lead due to great ball movement and stifling inside defense. They led by a score of 22-11 with only 3:55 to go before halftime, and looked to have the Gators on the ropes. However, Allegheny would then go on a 15-4 run in the final minutes to tie the game at 26 going into the break. Gannon carried the team offensively during the first 20 minutes of the game, scoring 15 of the team's 26 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
The second half was a tough battle in the paint. The game was tied five different times, and each team had a lead as big as five points during the final half of the game. The game was tied at 59 with 3:14 to go, after Gannon was able to sink a layup off a beautiful assist by Warlich. Allegheny took the lead their next possession off a tough three point play, and led until the clock expired.
On the night, Allegheny out rebounded the Yeowomen 36-33, but Oberlin did shoot 48.1-percent (25-of-54) compared to the Gators 42.4-percent (25-of-59) effort.
The Yeowomen went 11-for-18 (61.1%) from the free throw line and had 19 assists compared to 16 turnovers. Oberlin dominated in the paint, outscoring the Gators 40-24. All in all the game featured seven ties and 11 lead changes.
Oberlin takes the court again Saturday, January 14
th as they take a break from NCAC play, and travel to Marygrove College. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
