The Yeomen enter Saturday's contest with an all-time record of 39-36-6 against the Lords and have won four out of the last five meetings, including last year's thrilling 29-26 overtime win in Gambier (
Watch the game-winning play) … In the contest quarterback
Josh Mandel turned in the sixth-best passing performance in school history with 335 yards and four touchdowns … Three of those TD's - including the game-winner - went to
Adam Niec as he caught 10 balls for 93 yards … The Oberlin defense had three interceptions in the game with two of those coming from returners
David Kalgren and
Dane Stritt.
A Look at the Lords …
Kenyon enters the season coming off a winless 2010 campaign that saw them finish 0-10 … However, the team is more experienced on both sides of the ball, which should lead to a more competitive product on the field … The offense is led by junior quarterback Dan Shannon, who set the school record for completion percentage a season ago by connecting on 221-of-369 attempts for a 59.9-percent success rate ... With that being said the Lords still scored a league-low 9.3 points per game while the defense gave up the second most points per game at 30.6 … Senior Jeremy Oller leads an offensive line unit that allowed an NCAC-low 14 sacks last year … Sophomore linebacker Kolin Sullivan, who earned North Coast Athletic Conference Honorable-Mention accolades in 2010, anchors the defense as he returns as the team's top tackler after making 66 stops as a rookie.
New Faces All-Around …
With a large number of players graduating off the roster from last season, the Yeomen will be relying upon some new players to fill some large roles this season … The area with the most turnover is the offensive line where three players are slated to make their first-career starts at their respective positions on Saturday … Freshman
Rory Kaip takes over at right guard, while junior
Zeki Alikaya will be opposite of him at left guard for the first time… Veteran lineman
Tyler Benson also makes the transition from guard to center … Defensively, sophomore
Zach Kisley moves into the starting role at strong safety, while junior
Dominic Babb takes over at defensive tackle … Junior
Joe Cook now handles the place kicking duties.
From End-to-End …
The Yeomen defensive front is led by two of the NCAC's most dominant defensive ends in senior
Jake Hochendoner and junior
Clay Eaton … The duo combined for 10 sacks and 13 tackles for a loss last season … Eaton, who was an All-NCAC Honorable-Mention selection, finished the season with 39 tackles, while Hochendoner checked in with 36.
Looking for Two In a Row …
The Yeomen traditionally have not had much week-one success in recent history … Despite knocking off the Lords last year in the opener, the previous week-one win for the Yeomen last came all the way back in 1997 when they upended Thiel 18-17 to snap a 40-game losing streak.
Marvelous Mandel …
The Yeomen are only going to go as far as red-shirt junior quarterback
Josh Mandel takes them … Last season Mandel made six starts and saw time in nine games … A dual-threat option, Mandel accounted for 15 total touchdowns with 10 through the air and five on the ground … He finished sixth in the league with a pass efficiency of 126 … Overall, Mandel completed 101-of-170 attempts for 1,121 yards.
Schedule Flop …
Last season the Yeomen didn't play a single home game in the month of September, but this year things have changed as Oberlin will open the season with three straight home battles … After Saturday's game with Kenyon, Wooster comes to town on September 17 followed by Hiram on September 24 … October starts with road tilts at Wittenberg (Oct. 1) and Case (Oct. 8), but the month also features the final two home games of the season with face-offs against Wabash (Oct. 15) and Washington University (Oct. 22) … The season concludes with away games at Denison (Oct. 29), Ohio Wesleyan (Nov. 5) and Allegheny (Nov. 12)
