Meadville, Pa. – The Oberlin College baseball team fell to Allegheny College by the scores 4-3 and 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Field.

With losses the Yeomen will likely end their season with a record of 16-23. If they so choose, they could schedule a single nine-inning game this week to reach the NCAA maximum of 40 games in a season. The game-one setback was the Yeomen's eighth loss of the season in games decided by one run. With the sweep the Yeomen also fell to 1-14 in traditional road games.

Game one was a nail bitter throughout but sophomore Eric Knight (2-5) ended up being charged with the loss despite allowing just four hits and striking out a career-high eight in his complete-game effort. The Gators' Kyle Davis (6-2) was the victor as he too went the distance.

Allegheny took an early 1-0 lead, but the Yeomen responded by plating three runs in the second. Senior Max Phinney started the inning with a single, which was the 100th hit of his career. He would then score on rookie Steve DiNanno's double to the gap in right center. Brandon Cantrill and Robin Witjes would also add RBI's in the inning.

Unfortunately the Oberlin lead was short-lived as Matt Stahl tied the game with a two-run single in the home half of the second.

It would remain tied at three until the bottom of the sixth when the Gators were able to scratch out what proved to be the winning run. A hit batter to start the inning followed by a sac bunt and wild pitch set things up perfectly for the Gators. With one out and a runner on third, Frank Triozzi hit a sac fly to left field to give the Gators the lead.

In the seventh Ben Puterbaugh started the inning with a single, but two quick outs came right after. Looking to make something happen Puterbaugh stole second and with the throw airmailed into center field he tried to come all the way around third and score but he was gunned down at the plate to end the game.

Oberlin had plenty of opportunities before that as they stranded eight runners on base in the contest.

In the nightcap the two teams traded single tallies in both the second and third innings. The Yeomen's runs came courtesy of senior Ryan Mouch's single in the second and Phinney's single in the third.

It stayed tied at two until the bottom of the fifth when the Gators broke through by scoring two runs. They used three hits and a sac fly to plate the pair, but it could have been worse for the Yeomen as they did leave the bases loaded. The Gators would add a run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Just one day after getting the win in four innings of work against Hiram, senior Grady Campion took to the mound again and went all six innings. He allowed eight hits, five runs (four earned), while walking three and striking out two. With the loss he fell to 3-4 on the year.

Cantrill had two of the Yeomen's six hits in the game.

The Yeomen will be losing seven key seniors next season, but with a solid group of young talent they should be poised to make another run in the NCAC next spring.
