Box Score
Oberlin, Ohio – The Yeomen left 10 runners on base as they couldn't come through with a timely hit in the clutch which resulted in a 4-1 loss to Allegheny College on a cold, wet and rainy Friday at Dill Field. Game two of the twinbill was canceled due to rain.
Oberlin, which managed just three hits in the game, also hurt itself with some undisciplined at-bats that aided Allegheny pitcher Mike Pereslucha. While Pereslucha certainly pitched a great game with nine strikeouts, he did walk five, which could have easily been more if not for some ill-advised swings.
After an hour-and 45-minute rain delay to start the game, it didn't take long for the Gators to get going as they plated two runs in the top of the first courtesy of Matt Stahl's two-run home run.
The Yeomen threatened to answer back in the bottom of the first as they loaded the bases with nobody out, but were unable to score. Pereslucha got
Brandon Cantrill to line out to first and fanned both
Max Phinney and
Eric Knight on pitches that were out of the strike zone.
Oberlin (14-17, 5-8 NCAC) tried to break through again in the fourth with two on and just one out but Pereslucha induced two pop ups to get out of the jam unscathed.
Back-to-back hits by the Gators in the fifth resulted in them scoring another run. The Yeomen responded by pushing one across in the home half of the inning, but it could have easily been more. A leadoff single by
Robin Witjes followed by a walk to
Ben Kauder set things up perfectly.
Zach Jaspers followed with a sac bunt, but on the play Pereslucha tried to get the lead runner heading to third and airmailed the throw into left field. This allowed Witjes to score and left runners on second and third with nobody out. However, once again Pereslucha was able to limit the damage as he fanned
Ben Puterbaugh and Phinney and got Cantrill to pop up to second.
In the sixth it was more of the same as they had two on with one out, but left both runners stranded. After the Gators added another insurance tally in the top of the seventh, Jaspers led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the right field line but he too was left out there at game's end.
Phil Brua took the complete-game loss for the Yeomen as he allowed six hits through his 86 pitches (64 strikes) of work. Pereslucha needed 125 pitches (78 strikes) to get through the Yeomen lineup.
Oberlin will conclude NCAC play tomorrow at Ohio Wesleyan University starting at 1 p.m.
