Oberlin, Ohio – After one day of competition at the 2011 NCAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, both the Oberlin's men's and women's teams rest in third place with 29 points.

“We had some very good performances today and I am pleased what were able to achieve,” Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. “However, there are a lot of points to be had tomorrow and we need to be at our best.”

The Yeomen got the day started with a pair of second-place performances in the field events. Sophomore Alexander Guo posted a mark of 44-05.25 in the triple jump, while senior Josh Gallagher tossed the shot put 48-11.50.

Senior Ben Schild added four team points by checking in fifth in the 5,000 meters with a timestamp of 15:29.36

Getting the day started for the Yeowomen was senior Laura Vernon as she placed second in the pole vault by breaking her own school record and setting a new NCAC record with a mark of 11-01.50. Sarah Bechtel, a freshman from OWU, also cleared the same mark, but by doing so in fewer tries she was declared the winner.

Classmate Joanna Johnson continued her dominance as she blistered the field to win the 5,000 meters in 17:57.57, which was more than 20 seconds better than the second-place finisher.

Fellow senior Melissa DeLombaert picked up five team points in the triple jump by placing fourth overall with a mark of 32-08.25.

Marissa Clardy was the top qualifier in the 400-meter dash as she posted a new school record, a NCAC season-best time and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 58.60.

Senior Amanda Miller (2:22.68) and sophomore Amanda Gracia (2:24.09) were the top two finishers in the prelims of the 800. Miller's performance was the second-fastest in the conference this season.

The women of Ohio Wesleyan are currently in the lead with 77.5 points, followed by Allegheny at 42.5. Ahead of Oberlin on the men's side is Wabash (49) and Ohio Wesleyan (38).

With plenty of qualifiers on both the men's and women's sides, Oberlin will look to move up the rankings tomorrow. All of the action will get underway at 10:30 a.m. Fans that cannot make it to the John W. Heisman Field House can watch the meet online for free by accessing the link on theChampionship Homepage.
